Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Ray Emery turned aside 23 shots to help the
Chicago Blackhawks take a 2-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Sunday.
Patrick Kane and Patrick Sharp each had a goal for the Blackhawks, who have
posted wins in three consecutive games.
"I thought we played very well overall tonight," said Chicago head coach Joel
Quenneville. "We paid attention to details and didn't try to do too much."
Niklas Kronwall scored the lone goal for the Red Wings, who have dropped four
of their last six.
Detroit started Jimmy Howard in net, but he left in the first period with a
lower body injury. He gave up one goal on five shots and was back on the bench
in the second period. Joey MacDonald finished the game in net and allowed one
goal on 13 shots.
"Howie (Howard) has a lower body injury and he will be evaluated and we'll go
from there," said Detroit head coach Mike Babcock. "We had very opportunity to
win the game tonight and just didn't execute our shots well. I thought we did
lots of good things, just not enough to generate offense."
With the score tied in the second, the Blackhawks took the lead when Sharp
sent a centering pass from behind the net and Kane switched to the backhand
before sliding it past MacDonald.
Emery turned aside all seven shots in the third to preserve the lead and win
Chicago scored just 3:17 into the game on the power play when Sharp blasted a
slap shot from the left point through a screen for his 25th of the year.
Detroit, though, tied the game less than three minutes later when Darren Helm
sent a pass from the top of the left circle to the high slot where Kronwall
one-timed it home for his 14th of the season.
Chicago plays in St. Louis on Tuesday...Detroit plays in Philadelphia on
Tuesday...Chicago has won three of the five games with Detroit this season.
The two will meet one final time this season, in Detroit on April 7...Chicago
was 1-for-3 on the power play while Detroit was 0-for-4...After the game, the
Red Wings Reassigned forward Chris Conner to Grand Rapids of the American
Hockey League...Detroit defenseman Jakub Kindl left early in the first period
due to an upper-body injury.
