New York, NY (Sports Network) - Henrik Lundqvist made 27 saves to earn his
fourth shutout of the season as the New York Rangers downed the Nashville
Predators, 3-0, at Madison Square Garden.
Dan Girardi, John Mitchell and Ryan Callahan lit the lamp for New York, which
won for the sixth time in eight games.
Anders Lindback allowed two goals on 28 shots as the Predators had their five-
game win streak snapped.
"Going into this game we talked about playing a confident team and they were
on a roll," said Lundqvist. "I felt like the first 10 minutes they made some
good plays, but then we took over a little bit. We started playing more
physical and slowed them down a little bit."
Girardi gave Lundqvist all the offense he would need at the 6:15 mark of the
first period when Nashville's Jack Hiller redirected Girardi's shot from the
right circle over the glove of Lindback.
Mitchell gave the Rangers some cushion past the midpoint of the second period
with a wrister from the right circle that snuck through Lindback's pads,
and Callahan was awarded a goal in the final minute of regulation when he was
hooked from behind while racing towards the empty net to account for the final
Nashville's best chance to get to Lundqvist was the second period when the
Predators were awarded their only two power plays of the game, but they failed
to convert on the man advantages as Lundqvist turned aside all eight shots he
faced in the frame.
The 29-year-old Swede made 11 saves in the first period and eight in the third
to record his 39th career shutout.
"I thought we had a decent effort against a top team in the East. I don't
think we played poorly by any means," Predators center Mike Fisher said. "We
competed and just didn't bury our chances."
Nashville was denied a season-high six-game win streak for the second time
this year. The Predators also won five straight from December 8-17...Nashville
went 0-for-3 on the power play.
