NHL Game Summary - Buffalo at Toronto

(Tuesday, March 29th)

Final Score: Toronto 4, Buffalo 3

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Clarke MacArthur registered one goal and two assists, as the Toronto Maple Leafs kept their playoff hopes alive with a 4-3 victory over the Buffalo Sabres at Air Canada Centre.

Mikhail Grabovski scored the go-ahead goal late in the second period for Toronto, which has won four of its last five games. James Reimer made 28 saves for the Maple Leafs, who closed to within five points of Buffalo for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with five games remaining. The Sabres, though, have a game in hand.

"We had all four lines contributing tonight," said MacArthur. "Everyone was firing on all cylinders tonight and when we play that way we can beat anybody."

Ryan Miller stopped 31 shots for the Sabres, who were looking for a season- high fourth consecutive victory but suffered their third straight loss to Toronto.

"We got off to a rough start tonight," said Buffalo head coach Lindy Ruff. "We made some mistakes and weren't able to come back. We were pushing to get the offense going all night."

Buffalo is three points ahead of ninth-place Carolina.

It didn't take Toronto long to open the scoring as Dion Phaneuf's blast from just inside the blue line beat Miller glove side 1:34 into the contest.

The Maple Leafs doubled their advantage late in the first period when Darryl Boyce backhanded home a rebound with 1:14 remaining. However, Buffalo halved its deficit 62 seconds later on a goal by Thomas Vanek.

MacArthur restored Toronto's two-goal lead at 5:06 of the second period before Jason Pominville and Rob Niedermayer scored twice in a 30-second span to tie things up.

Pominville snapped a shot past Reimer 1:19 after MacArthur had made it a 3-1 game.

The visitors then capitalized on a turnover to draw even. Maple Leafs defenseman Carl Gunnarsson lost control as he retrieved a puck in his zone and Niedermayer whipped a backhander behind Reimer at 6:55.

Grabovski, though, tipped in a Phil Kessel pass to put Toronto up 4-3 with 6:25 to play in the middle frame.

Reimer turned aside eight shots over the final 20 minutes.
