Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Peter Budaj stopped 31 shots for his first
shutout of the season while Kevin Porter scored twice to help Colorado take a
5-0 win over Dallas at Pepsi Center.
Philippe Dupuis had a goal and two assists while Brandon Yip and Milan Hejduk
each added a goal and a helper for the Avalanche, who have won three of their
last four games.
"Dallas is a great team, but tonight we just outplayed them," said Budaj. "We
wanted to play with our system, not theirs. Our penalty killing was great
tonight and our defense forced them to shoot from bad angles."
Andrew Raycroft was tagged for all five goals on 45 shots for the Stars, who
had a three-game winning streak snapped.
"They played a strong game," said Dallas defenseman Nicklas Grossman. "We have
to find a way to execute better. Tonight it was frustrating, especially
knowing that we can score goals. That's the way it is in this league, there
are no easy games."
The Avs scored the only goal they needed halfway through the first period,
as Porter grabbed the puck at the left side and slipped a backhander past
Just under five minutes into the second, Colorado took a 2-0 lead when Hejduk
backhanded the puck into the net from the slot during a scrum in front.
Dupuis scored the first goal of his NHL career while shorthanded at the 13:05
mark of the second to give Colorado a 3-0 edge.
Porter netted a backhander 5:39 into the third while Yip tipped in Matt
Duchene's shot 31 seconds later for a 5-0 advantage.
Colorado wraps up its four-game home stand Tuesday against Calgary...Dallas
continues its three-game road trip in Los Angeles on Thursday...The Avs took
three of four from the Stars last season...Budaj has nine shutouts in his
career...Dallas forwards Loui Eriksson and Brad Richards both had five-game
point streaks stopped...Colorado blueliner Adam Foote missed his sixth
straight game with a concussion, while defensemen Kyle Cumiskey (concussion)
and Ryan Wilson (leg) were also out.
