Final Score: Columbus 3, Montreal 0
Columbus, OH (Sports Network) - Mathieu Garon stopped 29 shots for his first
shutout of the year as Columbus shut down Montreal, 3-0, at Nationwide Arena.
Garon improved to 3-0-0 on the season, and held an opponent scoreless for the
first time since his January 10 start against Dallas.
"It was a great game. 'Mat' was outstanding and we got off to a great start,"
said Blue Jackets head coach Scott Arniel. "We scored on the power play, our
top line looked good and our role players were good. Anytime you get a shutout
against a real good team like Montreal, it's a sign of growth for our team."
Rick Nash, Derick Brassard and Kyle Wilson tallied for the Blue Jackets, who
have won four of five. Jakub Voracek added two assists.
Carey Price allowed all three goals on 24 shots for the Canadiens, losers in
two straight after winning four in a row.
"I think we have some lines that are creating some opportunities and other
lines are not," said Canadiens head coach Jacques Martin. "We just have to get
back to playing strong away from the puck and be a little more direct in our
Nash finished off a 2-on-1 from the right wing by snapping a wrister over the
shoulder of Price to the far post for a 1-0 lead at 12:34 of the opening
It was 2-0 on a Columbus power play just 1:23 later when Brassard potted a
cross-ice dish from Voracek at the right side.
Garon needed to make 10 stops in the first 20 minutes, then nine in the second
period to keep the Habs off the board.
The Jackets went up 3-0 at the 6:22 mark of the third period as Wilson
converted the rebound of a Jared Boll shot with a backhander.
Garon finished off his whitewash with a 10-save third stanza.
"We played a solid game. Like the game against Philadelphia, we got a two goal
lead and it's a lot easier for a goalie to battle with a lead where you just
have to protect the lead I think that is easier," said Garon of his mindset in
net with a solid edge.
For Garon, a former second-round pick of the Canadiens in the 1996 draft, it
