NHL Game Summary - Philadelphia at Pittsburgh

(Friday, October 29th)

Final Score: Philadelphia 3, Pittsburgh 2

Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Claude Giroux scored twice as the Philadelphia Flyers downed the Pittsburgh Penguins, 3-2, at CONSOL Energy Center.

Daniel Carcillo scored the other goal for the Flyers, who won consecutive games for the first time this season. Sergei Bobrovsky stopped 26 shots in the win.

Kris Letang had a goal and an assist while Tyler Kennedy scored the other for the Penguins, who have dropped three straight. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 21 shots in the loss.

The first four minutes of the game saw a pair of fights and 32 penalty minutes handed out, but the first goal didn't occur till 8:12 in.

Evgeni Malkin received a pass at the top of the left circle and slid it down to the right side for a wide-open Letang, who redirected the puck past Bobrovsky for a 1-0 lead.

Philly tied the game 5:20 into the second period while shorthanded. Mike Richards skated into the Pittsburgh zone, but the defender swept the puck away from him. Richards caught up to the loose puck along the left boards and passed out to the slot for Giroux, who shifted to the backhand and lifted the puck over Fleury.

"[Richards] made a nice play. That was all him," recalled Giroux. "He sees the ice really well. The pass was right on my tape and I was able to beat [Fleury]."

With 6:26 to play in the second, the Flyers went up. Matt Carle held the puck at the left point and sent a simple shot on net. From in front, Carcillo got his stick on it and redirected it past Fleury for a 2-1 lead.

Pittsburgh got a power play 6:23 into the third when Jody Shelley was called for interference, but nothing came of it as the Flyers stymied the Penguins attack.

With 9:17 to play, Philly got an insurance goal on the power play when Giroux slammed the puck home from the left side during a scrum in front for his sixth goal of the year.

Pittsburgh got Fleury out of the net later for the extra attacker and made it a one-goal game as Sidney Crosby sent a hard backhand pass from the right circle to the left where Kennedy one-timed it home with 44.6 seconds left.

The Pens, though, were unable to net the equalizer as the Flyers hung on for the win.

"We didn't give ourselves a good chance by the way we executed," Crosby said.
