NHL Game Summary - Anaheim at Philadelphia
(Thursday, October 21st)
Final Score: Anaheim 3, Philadelphia 2
Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Ryan Getzlaf scored the game-winning goal
with 1:46 remaining in regulation to lift the Anaheim Ducks to a 3-2 win over
the Philadelphia Flyers at Wells Fargo Center.
"It doesn't matter how it goes in, it went in. We are desperate for wins,"
said Ducks head coach Randy Carlyle.
Lubomir Visnovsky and Jason Blake also scored for Anaheim, which evened its
mark to 1-1 on the club's current four-game road trip. Curtis McElhinney
allowed two goals on 40 shots in the victory.
Scott Hartnell and Claude Giroux scored for the Flyers, who have lost three
straight games. Sergei Bobrovsky made 19 saves in the losing effort.
Philadelphia will conclude its current season-long, five-game homestand on
Saturday against Toronto.
"It's alarming. It's disappointing we lost this game," said Flyers head coach
Peter Lavoilette.
With the score tied 2-2 late in the third period, an odd play led to the game-
winner by Getzlaf. The Ducks moved into their offensive zone on a 3-on-3 rush
and Bobrovsky made a save on a wrist shot from the slot.
However, the puck squirted loose and Getzlaf poked it while bearing down on
the Philly netminder. The disc trickled into the front right side of the net
barely over the goal line, but neither referee signaled for a goal despite
the Ducks celebrating on the ice. After a review by the replay booth, the goal
was confirmed and the Ducks held on for the win.
After Visnovsky's shot from the slot gave the Ducks the lead 35 seconds into
the game, the Flyers tied the score less than four minutes later.
During a scramble near the right post, Hartnell's whack at the loose disc
trickled underneath the pads of McElhinney and over the goal line. The referee
waived his arms immediately as to signal that the play was not a goal, but
after a review from the replay booth, Hartnell was credited with his first
goal of the season at the 4:16 mark.
Midway through the first stanza, Blake's tally put the visitors back on top.
Teemu Selanne skated behind the net and flipped a pass into the goal mouth,
where Blake sent a one-timer snap shot past Bobrovsky from in close.
In the middle stages of the second period, Todd Marchant hustled in on a clear
breakaway, but Bobrovsky made a pad save.
With 6:10 to go before the second intermission, Giroux's third goal knotted
the contest. Matt Carle sent a long pass across the neutral zone, which sent
Giroux in on a partial breakaway down the left side. Giroux's initial attempt,
a wrister from the low slot, was saved, but he followed the rebound and lit
the lamp with a backhander from the top of the crease.
