Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Jason LaBarbera stopped 24-of-26 shots as
Phoenix raced out to an early lead and clipped the New York Rangers, 3-2.
Shane Doan, Mikkel Boedker and Sami Lepisto recorded first-period scores for
the Coyotes, who have won three in a row and four of five.
Marian Gaborik and Sean Avery tallied late for the Rangers, who slid to their
fifth straight loss. Chad Johnson made 21 saves in defeat.
"We have to generate the offense somehow, and not just when we are down 3-0,"
Rangers forward Vinny Prospal said.
Gaborik put the Rangers on the board near the midway point of the third
period, then Avery cut New York's deficit to 3-2 just over two minutes
Rangers defenseman Michal Rozsival was sent off for high sticking inside of
two minutes left in regulation, and Johnson was called to the bench for an
extra attacker with 1:33 remaining.
Gaborik swatted a rebound out of mid-air from in close hit the right post with
1:25 left, and it proved to be the Rangers' best chance for an equalizer.
"We had two critical errors to let them back in the game," Coyotes head coach
Dave Tippett said. "And that's why we had a frenetic finish."
Phoenix jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals 41 seconds apart after
Doan and Boedker tallied inside the game's first seven minutes.
Lepisto increased the advantage to 3-0 at 14:13 and LaBarbera made sure the
lead held up through two periods with 14 saves, including 10 in the second
Phoenix hadn't beaten the Rangers since December 16, 2007, and hadn't topped
the Blueshirts in Arizona since December 31, 2001...Gaborik snapped a six-game
drought and reached the 30-goal mark for the sixth time in his career.
