NHL Game Summary - Phoenix at Detroit

(Tuesday, January 26th)

Final Score: Phoenix 5, Detroit 4 (OT)

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Shane Doan's goal 3:50 into overtime lifted the Phoenix Coyotes to a 5-4 victory over the Detroit Red Wings at Joe Louis Arena.

Ed Jovanovski sent the contest into the extra session with a goal inside the final minute of regulation while Keith Yandle added two goals for Phoenix, which has captured four of its last six games overall. Scottie Upshall also scored in the victory and Ilya Bryzgalov made 31 saves in the win. The Coyotes trailed by two goals with less than two minutes to go in the third period.

"Any way you look at it, it's a tough loss for us," said Red Wings coach Mike Babcock. "We were in a great situation to get two points and for them to get none, and they end up with two and we get one -- it doesn't help our confidence."

Nicklas Lidstrom scored twice for the Red Wings, who are winless in five of their last six games (1-2-3). Pavel Datsyuk and Patrick Eaves also scored for Detroit.

Jimmy Howard allowed five goals on 37 shots in the losing effort.

Jovanovski's ninth goal of the season -- a tap-in from the crease area while the Coyotes skated with the extra attacker and an empty net -- with 23 seconds remaining in regulation sent the contest into overtime.

"It says a lot about our team to be able to come back like this," said Jovanovski. "It definitely gives all of us that added confidence."

In the extra session, Doan's pass from behind the goal line near the left post hit skates and sticks in front and he followed the puck, which squirted loose atop the crease. Doan gained control near the right post and lifted it over Howard, who was sprawled along the ice and the visitors celebrated the win.

Detroit opened the scoring via Datsyuk's 12th goal at 7:58 of the first period. Henrik Zetterberg held control near the goal line and sent a pass into the goal mouth from a sharp angle for a tap-in goal by Datsyuk near the post.

The Coyotes knotted the contest while on the power play midway through the second stanza, when Upshall corralled a rebound and, while falling to the ice, swatted the puck into the back of the cage from the right side of the crease.

Less than two minutes later, Yandle's first goal of the contest gave the Coyotes a 2-1 lead. Radim Vrbata held control along the goal line to the right of the net and passed across the low slot for Yandle, who pinched in from the left point and fired a slap shot past Howard at the 12:07 mark.

However, on the ensuing shift, Eaves' eighth tally of the season tied it up.

Lidstrom put Detroit in front at 11:22 of the third when he maneuvered through the slot and lit the lamp with a backhander from the right side.

Exactly four minutes later, Lidstrom's second goal of the game and fifth of the season -- a quick snap shot one-timer at the left post while Detroit was on the power play -- increased the Red Wings lead to 4-2.

Yandle brought the visitors within one at 18:30 on the power play.
