San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Joe Pavelski and Jed Ortmeyer each scored
twice, as the San Jose Sharks topped the Buffalo Sabres, 5-2, in a matchup
between two of the NHL's best teams.
Evgeni Nabokov made 38 saves for the Pacific Division-leading Sharks, who lead
the league with 78 points. Dany Heatley also scored, as San Jose won its fifth
Ryan Miller gave up four goals on 23 shots for the Northeast Division-leading
Sabres, who have dropped three in a row. Jason Pominville had a goal and
assist in the loss, while Tim Connolly also scored.
In a 2-2 game, Pavelski put the hosts in front for good early in the third
period. Miller skated to the front of the crease to stop a shot, but the puck
leaked through his pads, and Pavelski muscled his way through to swipe it in
Then, just past the midway point of the final frame, San Jose capitalized on a
Sabres turnover to take a two-goal edge. A backhand pass behind the Buffalo
net went directly to Ryane Clowe, and he sent a pass out front for Ortmeyer,
who beat Miller at 10:27 for a 4-2 San Jose edge.
Buffalo pulled Miller in the final minutes, but Ortmeyer scored on an empty
net to secure the victory.
Connolly got the visitors on the board first with his wrister from the right
side 7:19 into the game.
"We knew they were a fast team," Heatley said. "They came out hard, got a good
forecheck going on us. I thought as the game went on we got stronger and got
Pavelski evened the score 2:07 into the second after a Sabres turnover. Manny
Malhotra poked the puck away from Steve Montador in the Buffalo end, picked
the puck up behind the goal line and dished out front for Pavelski's first
of the game.
"We weren't really skating or moving. We didn't have anything going up to that
point," Pavelski said. "We get a quick goal and we got going after that."
Heatley redirected the puck between Miller's pads with six minutes left in the
middle frame, though Pominville evened the score again on the power play, only
18 seconds into the third.
Ortmeyer recorded his first career two-goal game, while Pavelski got his
eighth...Malhotra and Scott Nichol each had two assists for the Sharks...San
Jose is 2-0 on a four-game homestand that continues Thursday against
Chicago...Buffalo fell to 2-2-2 on a seven-game road trip, which ends Monday
