NHL Game Summary - Buffalo at San Jose

(Saturday, January 23rd)

Final Score: San Jose 5, Buffalo 2

San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Joe Pavelski and Jed Ortmeyer each scored twice, as the San Jose Sharks topped the Buffalo Sabres, 5-2, in a matchup between two of the NHL's best teams.

Evgeni Nabokov made 38 saves for the Pacific Division-leading Sharks, who lead the league with 78 points. Dany Heatley also scored, as San Jose won its fifth consecutive game.

Ryan Miller gave up four goals on 23 shots for the Northeast Division-leading Sabres, who have dropped three in a row. Jason Pominville had a goal and assist in the loss, while Tim Connolly also scored.

In a 2-2 game, Pavelski put the hosts in front for good early in the third period. Miller skated to the front of the crease to stop a shot, but the puck leaked through his pads, and Pavelski muscled his way through to swipe it in at 6:31.

Then, just past the midway point of the final frame, San Jose capitalized on a Sabres turnover to take a two-goal edge. A backhand pass behind the Buffalo net went directly to Ryane Clowe, and he sent a pass out front for Ortmeyer, who beat Miller at 10:27 for a 4-2 San Jose edge.

Buffalo pulled Miller in the final minutes, but Ortmeyer scored on an empty net to secure the victory.

Connolly got the visitors on the board first with his wrister from the right side 7:19 into the game.

"We knew they were a fast team," Heatley said. "They came out hard, got a good forecheck going on us. I thought as the game went on we got stronger and got better."

Pavelski evened the score 2:07 into the second after a Sabres turnover. Manny Malhotra poked the puck away from Steve Montador in the Buffalo end, picked the puck up behind the goal line and dished out front for Pavelski's first of the game.

"We weren't really skating or moving. We didn't have anything going up to that point," Pavelski said. "We get a quick goal and we got going after that."

Heatley redirected the puck between Miller's pads with six minutes left in the middle frame, though Pominville evened the score again on the power play, only 18 seconds into the third.
