NHL Game Summary - Dallas at Edmonton

(Friday, January 22nd)

Final Score: Dallas 4, Edmonton 3

Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - James Neal scored with 22.2 seconds to play, less than a minute after Edmonton had tied the game, as the Stars sent the Oilers to their 10th straight loss, a 4-3 decision at Rexall Place.

Edmonton's slide has featured some agonizing defeats, and Friday's was no different.

The Oilers got hope after scoring with the extra attacker with 1:02 left. Sam Gagner got the goal officially, but the Stars' Mike Modano inadvertently kicked it past Marty Turco to make it a 3-3 game.

"I was just trying to kick it to my stick and I couldn't have kick it more solidly into the net," Modano said.

But Dallas came back and pressured the Edmonton net, nearly scoring when Oilers goaltender Devan Dubnyk stuffed Loui Eriksson. But the Stars kept the puck in the offensive zone, and an Oilers defenseman swept a shot away from the crease. Neal was in perfect position on the inside of the right circle and fired the go-ahead goal past Dubnyk.

Edmonton nearly evened the game again, as a rebound sat in the crease after Turco made a left pad save. But the Stars goaltender slid to his left to deny Dustin Penner's shot as Dallas held on for its first road victory since December 11 at San Jose.

Modano scored for Dallas, which has won three of four, while Turco made 36 saves.

Gagner had two goals for the Oilers, who were coming off Wednesday's overtime loss to Vancouver, in which the Canucks evened the game with 4:06 remaining before winning it in the extra session. Dubnyk stopped 28 shots.

"It's just not good enough. We can battle back all we want, if we lose the game it doesn't matter," Edmonton's Ryan Potulny said. "It's not enough to just battle back. We have to win these games."

Trevor Daley put the Stars on the board six minutes into the contest with a slap shot from the high slot, and Modano made it a 2-0 game with a power-play score 6 1/2 minutes later. Potulny scored on the man advantage only 39 seconds after Modano's goal to get the Oilers within one.

Jamie Benn then restored Dallas' two-goal edge with 8:36 left in the middle period. Steve Ott carried the puck up the right side of the ice on a Stars odd-man rush, then dished to the slot for Benn, who beat Dubnyk for a 3-1 lead.

Gagner's snap shot brought Edmonton within one with 19 seconds left in the frame.
