NHL Game Summary - Detroit at Dallas
(Saturday, January 16th)
Final Score: Dallas 3, Detroit 2 (SO)
Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Steve Ott scored the winner in the sixth round
of the shootout as the Dallas Stars took a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings
at American Airlines Center.
In the sixth round, Ott's low backhander appeared to be stopped by Jimmy
Howard as the goaltender threw it out with his glove on his second swipe at it
and the referee, who was right at the net, said it was not a goal. However,
after a lengthy review, it was determined that the puck had crossed the line
before Howard's second attempt with the glove got it out.
"I thought he saved it but then at the last second you saw my reaction and I
thought it crossed the line," said Ott.
Patrick Eaves represented the last hope for the Red Wings, but his wrister
went wide of the net and Dallas took the win.
Brad Richards and Loui Eriksson each had a goal while Alex Auld stopped 26
shots and all six shooters in the shootout for the Stars, who had lost six of
seven coming in.
"We had a call go our way tonight," said Dallas head coach Marc Crawford. "I
thought we worked real hard in our game tonight. Whether it was a break or a
right call, either way it was a positive call for us and we sorely needed it."
Todd Bertuzzi and Brian Rafalski each had a goal and Howard stopped 28 shots
for the Red Wings, who had won three of four. Henrik Zetterberg and Nicklas
Lidstrom each had two assists.
"We let them stick around too long," said Howard. "I thought we did a pretty
good job tonight and still got a point out of it. But it was frustrating the
way the game ended."
The Red Wings got on the board 5:10 in as Bertuzzi took a feed behind the
defense and went forehand to backhand and flipped the puck into the net for
his 13th goal of the season.
Skating on the power play, Detroit took a 2-0 lead at the 9:30 mark of the
first. Zetterberg had the puck at the right side and sent a pass to the man in
front. The puck missed its target and hit a stick, but it trickled over to the
left side of the net and Rafalski slammed it home.
Howard turned aside 11 shots in the first period to keep Dallas off the board.
The Stars made it a 2-1 game with a power-play goal of their own just 2:37
into the second as Richards skated down the left wing, faked the slap shot to
get Howard out of position and fired the puck in from a sharp angle.
Auld did a good job keeping Dallas in the game in the second period as he
stopped nine shots in the frame.
Dallas tied the game at the 3:53 mark of the third. Tom Wandell had the puck
behind the net and skated out to the right circle where he threw a shot on
net. Howard made the stop, but the rebound kicked out front and Eriksson
backhanded it home for his 19th goal of the season.
The rest of regulation and overtime went scoreless to force a shootout.
