NHL Game Summary - Detroit at Phoenix

(Saturday, January 2nd)

Final Score: Detroit 4, Phoenix 1

Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Tomas Holmstrom redirected a pair of Nicklas Lidstrom shots for two goals, Pavel Datsyuk added a power-play tally and Darren Helm tacked on an empty-netter to account for Detroit's 4-1 victory over Phoenix.

Jimmy Howard was credited with the win after a 35-save effort for the Red Wings, winners in three of their last four.

"That's how I score my goals," Holmstrom said. "Sometimes they go in, sometimes they go out, so I'm just happy when they go in."

Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 32-of-35 shots, while Matthew Lombardi scored on the power play in the loss for Phoenix. The Coyotes had won a club-record 10 straight on home ice before dropping their last two as host.

"We got a pretty good start -- I thought we had chances early," said Coyotes head coach Dave Tippett. "(The Red Wings) scored some timely goals, and they did what they had to do to win."

Detroit struck with 5:16 remaining in the opening frame, as Lidstrom's slap shot from the left point deflected off Holmstrom's stick and found the back of the net.

Howard stopped all 11 shots he faced in the first but was beaten 5:53 into the second, when, on a 5-on-3, Robert Lang threaded a pass through the crease to Lombardi on the right doorstep for the tying tally.

The Wings regained the lead on another Holmstrom rerouting of a Lidstrom blast over Bryzgalov's right shoulder with 18.6 seconds left in the middle period.

With Coyotes forward Shane Doan serving an interference minor early in the third, Datsyuk scored his 10th goal of the season at the 5:51 mark for a 3-1 lead that Howard helped stand up with 11 saves in the final stanza.

Helm's empty-netter with 51.1 ticks remaining capped the game's scoring.
