NHL Game Summary - Colorado at Dallas

(Sunday, March 14th)

Final Score: Colorado 5, Dallas 3

Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Paul Stastny scored twice and Craig Anderson made 48 saves, as the Colorado Avalanche earned a 5-3 win over the Dallas Stars at American Airlines Center.

Milan Hejduk and Darcy Tucker each had a goal and an assist, while Chris Stewart tallied the go-ahead goal in the second period for Colorado, which was coming off a 3-0 win over Florida on Thursday and has won three of four overall.

"We took a lead, then we lost it again, and it was a wakeup call that these games aren't going to be easy," Stastny said.

Brandon Segal registered two goals and Jamie Benn also lit the lamp for the Stars, who have dropped three in a row and six of their last seven overall.

Marty Turco allowed four goals on 18 shots, before being replaced by Kari Lehtonen in the second period. Lehtonen stopped 3-of-4 shots.

"Our guys battled hard today. There's nothing wrong with our effort," said Stars head coach Marc Crawford. "We've played extremely well. We haven't given up a lot. We just came up against a hot goaltender tonight, and he was the difference maker."

With Colorado ahead 4-3 after two periods, the Avalanche killed off a pair of Dallas power plays in the early stages of the third to maintain the one-goal lead. Stastny then gave his squad an insurance marker when he picked up a feather pass from Matt Hendricks at center, skated in and whipped a wrister past Lehtonen on the glove side with 7:37 to play.

Despite getting another power-play chance late in the game, the Stars weren't able to solve Anderson, who stopped 18 shots in the third period.

Hejduk opened the scoring at 10:19 of the first period to give the Avalanche the early lead before Benn took a feed from James Neal and put it home from the left circle to tie things with 5:29 left in the stanza.

Tucker's one-timer while on the power play put Colorado in front 2-1 4:28 into the second. However, Segal answered with a pair of tallies 1:22 apart. First, he gathered a pass from Brad Richards from behind the net and scored on a wrister from the mid slot at 5:59. Segal's slap shot off a drop pass from Mike Ribeiro beat Anderson from the right circle at 7:21 to give the Stars a 3-2 advantage.

The scoring spree continued when Peter Mueller's slap shot from the point was tipped home by Stastny at 11:05 to deadlock things again while on the power play. Stewart's wraparound with 6:14 left in the second put the Avs up 4-3. Turco was then pulled in favor of Lehtonen.
