Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Ryan Miller made 31 saves and the Buffalo Sabres
completed a perfect road trip with a 4-1 win against the New Jersey Devils at
Jason Pominville had a goal and an assist, while Clarke MacArthur, Tim Kennedy
and Paul Gaustad each lit the lamp for the Sabres, who ended a three-game road
trip Wednesday and ran their record as the visitor to 4-0-0 this season.
Buffalo is now 7-1-1 on the season overall.
"We have to show improvement every night, and we also have to show that we can
bring a work ethic every night. When you have a good start...it shows that the
guys really care and want to play. That's going to be a key for the season,"
Andy Greene scored the lone goal for the Devils, who came in winners of three
straight and six of seven overall. Martin Brodeur faced 27 shots and allowed
all four goals.
"You learn from the way you play against top teams. That was a team that was
highly confident and you can't just spot them two goals and think that you can
come back," said Brodeur.
Buffalo jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a pair of early strikes against Brodeur.
MacArthur cleaned up a loose puck in front of the net following an offering
from the right point by Craig Rivet just 1:21 in. At the six-minute mark,
Kennedy notched his first career tally on a wraparound for a 2-0 edge that
carried into the second period.
New Jersey picked up a power play early in the middle session and capitalized
as Greene snuck in from the right point and snapped a wrist shot past Miller
on the stick side to halve the advantage.
Things stayed that way until Buffalo gained a two-goal cushion with 10:35 to
play in the third. Matt Ellis shielded a defender from the puck in the left
corner and whipped a pass in front for Gaustad for an easy score.
A high-stick by Nicklas Bergfors just past the three-minute mark sent the
Sabres on the power play, and Pominville's ensuing score sealed another road
New Jersey was playing its first game since losing top defenseman Paul Martin
to a broken left arm and forward Jay Pandolfo to a shoulder injury. Both are
expected to miss four-to-six weeks...While New Jersey is 5-0-0 as the guest
this year, the club has struggled to a 1-4-0 mark on home ice...Steve Montador
had a pair of assists for Buffalo...The Devils and Sabres split four meetings
last season. Buffalo won both of its games in Jersey last year, but has
dropped 11 of 15 overall in the Garden State.
