NHL Game Summary - Washington at NY Islanders

(Saturday, October 24th)

Final Score: Washington 3, NY Islanders 2 (OT)

Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Brooks Laich scored one minute into overtime to lift the Washington Capitals to a 3-2 victory over the New York Islanders.

Keith Aucoin and Mike Green each had third-period goals for the Capitals, who rallied from a two-goal deficit and beat the Isles for a fifth straight time. Jose Theodore stopped 28 shots in the triumph, Washington's fourth in a row overall.

"They came ready to play, but we didn't panic," said Theodore. "It's a big win, a huge win."

Radek Martinek notched his first career shorthanded goal and Jeff Tambellini also lit the lamp for New York, which fell to 1-4-4 on the season. Dwyane Roloson made 21 stops in defeat.

"It's not going to be easy for us and we have to understand that," said Isles coach Scott Gordon. "You just make sure you develop a killer instinct. To me that's the separation between the teams that do have that and success in the third period that we haven't had."

Green's goal at 6:02 of the final period, a shot from above the right circle, cut the Washington deficit to 2-1.

Aucoin then scored on a wraparound with 6:52 remaining, and in the extra session, Green sent a pass from the left circle to in front, where Laich scored the game-winner on a deflection.

Martinek's goal, 12:14 into the first, came on a one-timer from the slot after a drop pass from Frans Nielsen. It became 2-0 at 3:44 of the third on Tambellini's backhand redirection from the left side of the net.
