Final Score: Phoenix 3, Colorado 1
Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Wojtek Wolski scored with 23.7 seconds left
in regulation in his first game with Phoenix to beat his former Colorado club
in a 3-1 final.
Both teams made a deadline deal Wednesday, with Wolski heading from Colorado
to Phoenix for forwards Peter Mueller and Kevin Porter.
Phoenix veteran Shane Doan found Wolski set up at the left circle for a one-
timer to further the storyline and break a tie score. Fellow newcomer Lee
Stempniak, brought in from Toronto on an exceptionally busy day for the
Coyotes at the deadline, scored in his first game as well.
Ilya Bryzgalov came up with 23 saves for the win, Phoenix's first in four
"It was great, we got a lot of chances and I think it will only get better
with each game. We're all excited about playing with each other," said Wolski
of working with his new teammates.
John-Michael Liles scored for the Avalanche, who were coming off a 4-3 win
against Anaheim Wednesday. Craig Anderson had 27 saves in the setback.
"We've come back from tough losses where we maybe should have got a point, but
we respond the right way," said Anderson of moving on from a tough loss.
Stempniak crashed the net to cash in on a Vernon Fiddler centering feed to
open the scoring at 6:13 of the first.
Liles cranked a slap shot from low in the right circle for a power-play goal
to tie the game at 1-1 with 3:02 to go in the second.
Things stayed that way until the newest Coyote broke through in the final
minute, and Radim Vrbata sealed it with an empty-net goal.
Wolski had 17 goals and 30 assists with Colorado this season and led the club
with a plus-15 rating. His 47 points upon joining the team matched Doan for
the team lead...The Avs were 1-for-3 on the power play, while Phoenix was 0-
for-2...The Coyotes opened their post-Olympic schedule with a 5-2 loss to St.
Louis on Tuesday.
