NHL Game Summary - Detroit at Dallas|
(Saturday, December 19th)
Final Score: Dallas 4, Detroit 3
Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Karlis Skrastins recorded the first multi-goal
game of his 11-year career, netting his first two tallies of the year to
propel Dallas past Detroit, 4-3.
Skrastins, a defenseman, had scored just 27 goals in his 711 career games
coming into Saturday, and James Neal had the other two goals for the Stars,
who snapped a three-game losing streak. Both Skrastins and Neal each had an
assist, and Loui Eriksson and Brad Richards had two helpers apiece in the win.
"This was one of those games where we played all 60 minutes," Skrastins said.
"We showed team character. Tough game, but I think we played really hard...We
didn't give up."
Marty Turco stopped 30-of-33 shots for Dallas, which has won four straight
home games over Detroit.
Pavel Datsyuk and Todd Bertuzzi had a goal and two assists apiece for the Red
Wings, who had won their previous four games. Tomas Holmstrom also scored,
while Jimmy Howard had a lackluster performance, allowing four goals on just
21 shots in defeat.
"It's a funny game sometimes," Howard said. "I felt fine out there, just one
goes off the shin pads, another I never picked it up until it was on Neal's
stick. They got a couple lucky bounces out there."
The third period began with the game tied, 3-3, but Skrastins gave Dallas its
third lead of the game, 4-3, with a wrist shot into the top right corner that
beat Howard 1:16 into the frame.
Turco proved to be impenetrable in the third period, stopping all nine shots
he faced. A tripping call on Richards with 26.4 seconds left gave Detroit one
last hope, but they couldn't net the equalizer with a 6-on-4 advantage.
Holmstrom scored the only goal of the first period, picking up a loose rebound
in front with 2:38 to play for a 1-0 Red Wings lead.
Skrastins tied the game for Dallas 1:40 into the second period on a one-timer
from Mike Ribeiro. Neal then put the Stars in front for the first time at the
12:14 mark of the middle frame.
Detroit made it 2-2 with 4:21 left in the second on Datsyuk's redirection of a
Bertuzzi shot. Neal came right back with his second of the game 66 seconds
later to put Dallas ahead again.
Datsyuk sent a feed out into the slot from behind the net for Bertuzzi, who
one-timed a shot past Turco with a minute left in the middle period for a 3-3
game heading to the third.
Detroit played its first game without star forward Henrik Zetterberg, who
separated his left shoulder in the last game and will miss at least two
weeks...Dallas is now 3-1-4 in December and leads the season series with
Detroit, 2-1...The Stars have not lost four in a row since March 17-30 of last
season, when they lost seven straight.
