Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Ryan Miller stopped 40-of-42 shots as Buffalo
downed Toronto, 5-2, at HSBC Arena.
Derek Roy, Toni Lydman, Mike Grier and Matt Ellis tallied during a four-goal
second period for the Sabres, winners in five of their last six.
Viktor Stalberg and Lee Stempniak scored for the Maple Leafs, who lost for the
second straight time after winning six of eight.
Starter Vesa Toskala was dented for four goals on 10 shots in the loss. Jonas
Gustavsson finished the game by halting 16-of-17 shots.
Roy began the burst for the Sabres with 1:32 gone in the second period,
knotting the game 1-1.
Lydman gave the Sabres a 2-1 edge at 7:02 on another Toskala folly, as the
Toronto netminder failed to glove the high shot, then saw the puck slide
behind him and over the goal line.
Grier boosted the edge to 3-1, when an attempted centering pass from Tim
Kennedy deflected off his thigh and in at 9:14, then Ellis made it a three-
goal contest with a wrister to the glove side at 12:48.
Thomas Vanek's wraparound score with 8:51 left in regulation put Buffalo up
5-1, then Stempniak capped the scoring with 19.2 seconds on the clock.
Stalberg opened the scoring 3:06 into the contest, notching his first career
goal on a wrister from the right circle.
"[Miller] deserves a lot of the credit, he really held us in there the first
20 [minutes]," Grier said. "I think once guys got in [the locker room] and
settled down we got after it more."
Buffalo has won all three meetings with Toronto this season and eight in a row
since New Year's Day...The Sabres welcomed back forward Paul Gaustad, who
missed the last 10 games with a leg injury.
