NHL Game Summary - Vancouver at Minnesota

(Sunday, February 14th)

Final Score: Minnesota 6, Vancouver 2

St. Paul, MN (Sports Network) - Kyle Brodziak registered a goal and two assists, as the Minnesota Wild scored four times on the power play in a 6-2 triumph over Vancouver at Xcel Energy Center.

Andrew Brunette, Marek Zidlicky and Cal Clutterbuck each had a goal and a helper for the Wild, who had two lost straight in regulation and finished a five-game homestand with a 3-2-0 record.

Minnesota goaltender Niklas Backstrom, who will represent Team Finland in the Olympics, stopped 27 shots.

Mason Raymond and Mikael Samuelsson lit the lamp for the Canucks, who have split the first eight games on their epic 14-game road trip. Team Canada netminder Roberto Luongo allowed five goals on 32 shots before he was replaced in the third period by Andrew Raycroft, who made eight saves.

"Our (penalty kill) struggled. It was one of those games where we didn't have it mentally, physically or emotionally," said Vancouver forward Ryan Kesler.

Vancouver heads into the league's hiatus tied with Colorado for first place in Northwest Division with 76 points. The Wild, meanwhile, are 13th in the Western Conference with 64 points - five behind Calgary for the final playoff spot.

"(The win helps) put ourselves in position to make a run in March and April," Brunette said.

Guillaume Latendresse staked Minnesota to a 1-0 lead on the power play at the 13:17 mark of the first period.

Brodziak made it 2-0 at 8:22 of the second period, one-timing a Clutterbuck pass behind Luongo. It was his seventh goal of the season -- four of which have come against Minnesota.

Zidlicky scored with the man advantage 56 seconds later for a three-goal bulge.

After Raymond put Vancouver on the board four minutes into the third period, Brunette and Clutterbuck scored 58 seconds apart to extend the lead to 5-1.

Brunette's backhander came on a power play at 7:06. Clutterbuck then chased Luongo from the crease.

Samuelsson found the back of the net at 9:39, but it wasn't enough for Vancouver as Minnesota defenseman Cam Barker, playing his first game following Friday's trade from Chicago, scored while up a man with 1:40 remaining.
