NHL Game Summary - Phoenix at Detroit

(Monday, December 14th)

Final Score: Detroit 3, Phoenix 2

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Derek Meech scored the eventual game-winning goal early in the second period and the Detroit Red Wings held on for a 3-2 win over the Phoenix Coyotes at Joe Louis Arena.

Patrick Eaves and Kris Newbury also tallied for the Red Wings, who have won seven straight over the Coyotes in Detroit and have lost only twice in the last 14 meetings overall to Phoenix.

Newbury was recalled from Grand Rapids of the American Hockey League earlier on Monday. Jimmy Howard turned aside 30-of-32 shots, including all 11 in the third period for Detroit, which was coming off a 3-2 overtime win at Nashville on Saturday and has won three straight.

"We need secondary production besides our top two lines," Howard said. "We need the third and fourth lines to get in there and chip away for us. Guy like [Newbury], first game, first shot, first goal for the Red Wings. That's great. Guys did a great job out there tonight battling."

Taylor Pyatt and Radim Vrbata scored for the Coyotes, who have lost two of their last three since winning the previous five games. Ilya Bryzgalov, who was making his 13th straight start, made 29 saves.

Detroit held a 3-2 lead after two periods, then played a good defensive third, limiting the Coyotes chances throughout the stanza. Phoenix had one last opportunity in the waning moments with a faceoff in the Red Wings zone with 13 seconds remaining. After a timeout, the Coyotes won the draw and Howard made a pad save off a Shane Doan slap shot to preserve the victory.

"We're disappointed with the way we played," Doan said. "We give them credit, they've got a good team. But we didn't play up to our standards of what we think we're capable of for the whole 60 minutes."

Detroit got on the board 5:25 into the opening period when Newbury took a feed from Kris Draper and put it home from in close. While shorthanded, Eaves picked up the puck in his own defensive zone, skated it down the left side and surprised Bryzgalov with a wrist shot to the short side, making it 2-0 at 10:37.

Pyatt put in a rebound off a Robert Lang shot 4 1/2 minutes later to get the Coyotes to within one.

Meech's slap shot from just inside the blueline handcuffed Bryzgalov 2:05 into the second and the Red Wings were ahead by a 3-1 margin. Vrbata's fluttering shot from the right circle got by Howard with 37 seconds remaining in the period to make it a one-goal game after two periods of play.
