NHL Game Summary - Philadelphia at New Jersey

(Saturday, October 3rd)

Final Score: Philadelphia 5, New Jersey 2

Newark, NJ (Sports Network) - Ray Emery posted his second straight victory with 24 saves as the Philadelphia Flyers downed the New Jersey Devils, 5-2, at Prudential Center.

Jeff Carter, Mike Richards, Ian Laperriere and Darroll Powe tallied for Philadelphia, which posted just its second road victory over New Jersey since March, 2004.

"That's what you hope for," Emery said of the strong start. "You can't predict anything, but that's why you want to have a good camp to have a strong start, get started on the right foot. We're definitely happy winning two games in a row and having healthy bodies going back for our home opener."

Matt Carle had a goal and one assist while James vanRiemsdyk added two helpers for the Flyers, who have won the season's first two games for the first time since beginning the 1998-99 season with three straight victories.

Brian Rolston and Jamie Langenbrunner provided the offense for the Devils, who have dropped two of their three home openers since moving from the Meadowlands prior to the 2007-08 season.

Martin Brodeur's 1,000th career game was one to forget, as the future Hall of Famer looked shaky in allowing all five goals on 27 shots.

"If you score a few goals early you get that adrenaline going," said Brodeur. "We just started and couldn't score on our power play. They scored a goal and from there it went south on us."

The Flyers killed off a two-man disadvantage midway through the first period and the visitors were rewarded when Carter tallied by following up his own rebound and beating Brodeur from the left side at 15:57.

Philly also had to weather an early two-man down situation in the second period, and after Emery made some key stops Laperriere beat Brodeur from a sharp angle on the right side for a 2-0 game at 9:20.

Richards then put the Flyers up by three with 4:37 to play, when his spinning wraparound got past the Devils' veteran netminder.

Powe managed to flutter a shot from the outer edge of the left circle into the net at the 7:34 mark of the third period for a 4-0 game, but Rolston blistered a shot from the left wing at 9:44 to put the Devils on the board with a power- play score.

Carle slammed a rolling puck home low to the far side with 8:47 to play and the Flyers led 5-1 before Langenbrunner notched a short-handed score with 6:20 remaining.

Emery and the Flyers shut the door for the remainder of the contest.
