NHL Game Summary - Colorado at St. Louis

(Monday, December 7th)

Final Score: Colorado 4, St. Louis 0

St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Chris Stewart finished with two goals and an assist while Peter Budaj made 35 saves for his first shutout of the season, as the Colorado Avalanche blanked the St. Louis Blues, 4-0, at Scottrade Center.

Paul Stastny and Matt Duchene also scored for the Avalanche, who have won two straight games and concluded their five-game road trip with a 3-1-1 mark. Wojtek Wolski posted three assists in the victory.

"Any time you can go 3-1-1 on a road trip, these are games and points that are going to pay off down the line," said Stewart.

Chris Mason allowed four goals on 22 shots for the Blues, who saw their brief two-game win streak halted.

Stewart's first goal of the game and fifth of the season occurred with only 11 seconds remaining in the opening period. The Avs were skating on the power play and Kyle Quincey's shot from the point was deflected high over the shoulder of Mason by Stewart, who was stationed atop the crease.

"They started fast and we came back and matched that pace of play after the first five minutes, but then we gave up that goal near the end of the first period," said Blues head coach Andy Murray.

At the 6:08 mark of the second stanza, Stastny's eighth goal made it 2-0. Stewart started the play from along the goal line to the left of the net amid a partial 2-on-1 with Wolski, who fanned on his shot attempt but in the process ran over Mason. With the goaltender on his belly, Stastny easily put the loose disc into the back of the cage from the goal mouth.

With 6:07 to go before the second intermission, the visitors grabbed a three- goal lead -- again it was Stewart via a deflection in front. John-Michael Liles released a one-timer from the right point and the shot deflected off the shin pad of Stewart and past Mason.

Duchene's ninth goal at 12:44 of the final stanza capped the scoring.
