NHL Game Summary - Phoenix at Chicago

(Friday, February 5th)

Final Score: Phoenix 2, Chicago 1 (SO)

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Adrian Aucoin netted the decisive goal in the shootout, as the Phoenix Coyotes edged the Chicago Blackhawks, 2-1, at United Center.

With the shootout tied heading to the third round, Aucoin fired a shot that deflected in off the right shoulder of Chicago goaltender Cristobal Huet. The Coyotes prevailed when Jason LaBarbera poke checked the puck off the stick of Blackhawks forward Marian Hossa.

Radim Vrbata scored a power-play goal, and LaBarbera turned aside 28 shots for the Coyotes, who extended their winning streak to a season-high six games.

"We did a lot of good things tonight," said Phoenix head coach Dave Tippett. "I thought we made some mistakes to give them some chances, but LaBarbera was really strong in goal for us. It was a very competitive game again; we competed hard, and we found away to hang around the game, and we found a way to get two points."

Colin Fraser had the lone goal in regulation for the Blackhawks, who are winless in three straight. Huet made 21 saves in defeat.

"Trying to win the game 2-1, would have been nothing wrong with that," said Chicago head coach Joel Quenneville. "We have to fight through the (frustration), knowing that checking is going to be a priority from here on out. Finding a way to win 2-1, there's nothing wrong with that."

Chicago drew first blood at 4:46 of the first period. LaBarbera made a left pad save on Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith, but Fraser stashed the rebound.

Vrbata tied the game with 3:18 to play in the second period.
