NHL Game Summary - Colorado at Nashville|
(Thursday, February 4th)
Final Score: Nashville 5, Colorado 3
Nashville, TN (Sports Network) - Patric Hornqvist notched two goals and an
assist, and Jason Arnott added a season-high four points, and Nashville
notched a badly needed victory with a 5-3 win over Colorado at Sommet Center.
Arnott finished the game with a goal and three assists for Nashville, which
had lost six of seven but still holds the seventh spot in the Western
Conference. Steve Sullivan added a goal and an assist, while Joel Ward also
tallied once in the win.
"It's been tough," Arnott said of the team's recent stretch. "We've tried
different things, and the main thing is we shot more pucks, got more pucks at
net, the screens in front and (the puck) went in for us. Sometimes they don't
go in. We've just got to stay positive."
Pekka Rinne stopped 23-of-26 shots for the Predators, who won three of four
against the Avs this season.
Matt Duchene and Cody McLeod scored for Colorado, which has lost four of five
after a six-game win streak. Craig Anderson allowed all five goals on 36 shots
in defeat, and Justin Mercier notched his first career NHL goal in the closing
"We didn't work very hard, we didn't do the little to get calls, to get
plays," said Avs defenseman Scott Hannan. "You got to play in the offensive
zone; we got caught in our own zone, we turned the puck over. We were sloppy
in a lot of areas."
With the game tied, 2-2, late in the second period, Nashville scored twice to
head to the third with a cushion.
The Preds took a 3-2 lead with 5:38 left in the frame, as Sullivan sent a
cross-ice pass to Arnott, who snapped an immediate shot past Anderson.
Then with just 41 seconds remaining, Arnott's shot from the point was tipped
in by Hornqvist for a power play tally and a two-goal advantage.
With 9:29 left in the game, Sullivan's 11th goal of the year put the game
away, as Nashville had a 5-2 lead at that point.
Mercier tallied for Colorado with 1:18 left to account for the final margin.
The Avalanche opened the scoring with the first period's only goal.
Chris Stewart was able to beat a Nashville defender to the puck in the neutral
zone and skated into the offensive zone on a 2-on-1 rush with McLeod. Stewart
dished the puck across the ice to McLeod, who deposited the disc into the net
Hornqvist tied the game 6:46 into the second on the power play, rifling a
slapshot from the right point past Anderson.
Nashville took its first lead just over a minute later. Jerred Smithson put a
shot on net that Anderson couldn't handle, juggling the puck. Ward was there
to put it into the net before the Colorado netminder could gain control.
Duchene, though, made it a 2-2 game for the Avs, firing a wrister past Rinne
from the slot for a power-play tally with 6:01 left in the second.
Shea Weber had two assists for the Predators...Nashville went 3-for-5 on the
power play, while Colorado went only 1-for-3...The Preds are 16-10-2 at home,
while the Avs are 15-11-4 on the road.
