left in regulation lifted New Jersey over Tampa Bay, 3-2, at Prudential
Brian Rolston and Niclas Bergfors also scored for the Devils, who have won
four of five. Martin Brodeur made 22 stops for the win.
"We made it a little more interesting than we would have liked. We stuck with
it and we came out on top," said Devils defenseman Andy Greene.
Vincent Lecavalier and Steve Downie tallied for the Lightning, who have lost
four in a row and five of six. Antero Niittymaki made only 16 saves in the
Over a minute after Matt Halischuk narrowly missed putting the Devils ahead,
Greene fired a shot from the right point near the boards which somehow
missed a host of bodies and slipped past Niittymaki. The puck did manage to
nick Langenbrunner at some point on the way through for the winning score.
"Everybody knows how well the defensemen can shoot the puck, and on a play
like that, everyone tries to take their place, take a man, but that happens.
What can you do," said a dejected Niittymaki.
Following a scoreless first period, Lecavalier notched his sixth goal of the
year 1:26 into the second to put the Bolts ahead.
After sleepwalking through much of the first 40 minutes, New Jersey forged
ahead early in the third on power-play goals by Rolston at 1:15 and Bergfors
Downie then tied the game with three minutes left in regulation on a Tampa man
advantage thanks to quick passing between Steven Stamkos and Ryan Malone.
Brodeur notched his 16th win of the season...The Devils have won 10 in a row
over the Lightning, dating back to October, 2007.
