NHL Game Summary - Los Angeles at Edmonton|
(Tuesday, April 7th)
Final Score: Los Angeles 2, Edmonton 1
Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Jonathan Quick made 38 saves as the Los
Angeles Kings ended any hope of Edmonton making the playoffs with a 2-1 win
over the Oilers at Rexall Place.
The loss, coupled with St. Louis' 5-1 win over Phoenix on Tuesday, officially
eliminated the Oilers from the postseason. Edmonton has now missed the
playoffs for three straight seasons.
Alexander Frolov and Wayne Simmonds lit the lamp for the Kings, who have won
two of their last three games.
"I think we came in and focused on our own game," said Simmonds. "We got out
to an early start and carried it through."
Fernando Pisani scored the lone goal while Dwayne Roloson made 27 saves for
the Oilers, who have dropped four of their last five games, all at home.
"We're in a situation where it's do or die over a three or four-game span.
That's a tough thing to do," said Oilers forward Sam Gagner. "We got ourselves
in a hole and it's a really tough one to get out of."
Los Angeles took a 1-0 lead just 55 seconds into the contest as Frolov blew a
slap shot past Roloson for his 31st goal of the season.
Less than three minutes later, the Kings took a 2-0 lead as Simmonds' snap
shot found the back of the net for his eighth goal of the season.
Quick needed to make just six saves in the first period to keep Edmonton off
The Oilers cut their deficit in half with 3:31 left in the second. Holding the
puck at the left point, Denis Grebeshkov threw a shot on net that Pisani
tipped in the slot. The disc then hit off the skate of an LA player and snuck
past Quick to make it 2-1.
Quick, who made 18 stops in the second period, was on his game in the third as
he was called upon often to keep the lead.
With under five minutes to play, he stopped a high shot from Grebeshkov and
left a rebound at the left side, but the puck slid just past the reach of Ales
Hemsky, who had an open net.
Edmonton pulled Roloson from the net late in the final frame, but the Kings
and Quick, who made 14 stops in the frame, held on for the win.
