Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Mike Comrie scored twice and Mark Streit had
a goal and an assist as the New York Islanders defeated the Florida Panthers,
4-2, at Nassau Coliseum.
Sean Bergenheim also tallied, while Kyle Okposo chipped in with a pair of
assists for the Islanders, who have split their last four games after
dropping the previous 10.
Joey MacDonald was solid between the pipes for New York, turning aside 27-
of-29 shots. It was the netminder's first win since a 4-2 victory over Ottawa
on November 29.
Brett McLean and Nathan Horton accounted for the Panthers goals. Florida has
lost four straight and six of eight.
Tomas Vokoun made 19 saves before being replaced by Craig Anderson for the
start of the third period. Anderson stopped 12-of-13 shots.
Florida opened the scoring with 1:36 left in the opening period when McLean's
redirection from the slot of a Nick Boynton pass got by MacDonald to give the
Panthers the early edge.
Comrie then took over, lighting the lamp twice in the second stanza. The first
came as he was driving to the net and had Okposo's pass go off his skate and
into the wide open net. The play was briefly reviewed but the goal was upheld,
tying the contest at 1-1 at 7:50.
The veteran center struck again with 4:55 left in the frame. Standing along
the right goal line, Comrie let a quick wrist shot go that surprised Vokoun,
beating the netminder to put the Islanders in front for the first time of the
Bergenheim gave New York an insurance marker with only 24 ticks to go in the
second to make it a 3-1 game heading into the second intermission.
Streit's power-play blast off a feed from Okposo gave the Isles a three-
goal cushion with 6:26 left in the third. Horton's tally with 28 seconds
remaining in the contest accounted for the 4-2 final score.
The Islanders begin a four-game road trip at Phoenix on Friday, while
Florida plays at Pittsburgh on Saturday...The Panthers have given up 19 goals
during their four-game losing skid...Islanders center Doug Weight had an
assist in the win and is now one point shy of 1,000 for his career...New York
snapped a six-game losing skid to the Panthers.
