NHL Game Summary - Minnesota at Edmonton

(Saturday, February 28th)

Final Score: Edmonton 3, Minnesota 2

Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Dwayne Roloson was outstanding between the pipes with 43 saves and the Edmonton Oilers held off a furious Minnesota Wild attack in the final period to emerge with the 3-2 win.

Tom Gilbert got the game-winner off a great feed from Liam Reddox late in the second period for Edmonton, which has won two of three following a three-game skid. Gilbert also had an assist while Reddox also set up a Zach Stortini goal for his first career multi-point effort. Ales Hemsky also scored.

Andrew Brunette and Antii Miettinen lit the lamp for Minnesota, which had a 27-save effort from Josh Harding go by the wayside in the club's third straight loss and sixth over the last eight games.

This Northwest Division clash featured two of four teams entering Saturday tied for the final two playoff berths in the Western Conference. Dallas and Anaheim, the other two, tangled earlier in the day with the Ducks pulling out a 4-3 triumph.

The end of the game saw an incident that could very well cast a dark shadow over the contest as Edmonton's Ethan Moreau caught a high-stick flush in his right eye after Miettinen had his blade inadvertently thrust up after stepping on Moreau's foot with 20 seconds left. Moreau stayed laying on his stomach for a stretch before being helped to the locker room. He was taken to Royal Alexandria Hospital, which specializes in optometry.

"The stick looks like it gashed the socket and the doctors said it raked across the eyeball. It looks pretty serious," Oilers head coach Craig MacTavish said following the game.

Miettinen was assessed a double-minor on the play.

Reddox found Stortini a little over five minutes into the second, pulling Edmonton even at two goals apiece and Gilbert gave the hosts a 3-2 lead at 15:22 of the frame with a top-shelf wrister from the slot past the glove of Harding after receiving a strong pass back through traffic from Reddox.

Roloson had to come up with a flurry of top-notch saves in the third, including a host of point-blank stops following Edmonton giveaways in the defensive zone. His 18 third-period stops were highlighted by a stretch where he flopped in the crease for a pair of stops after losing his stick. It didn't hurt that the Wild found four posts in the period as well.

Brunette's power-play tally put the Wild on the board 6:14 into the contest and Hemsky's 20th of the season tied things up for the Oilers at 12:47.

Minnesota broke a deadlock with 35 seconds left in the opening frame via a series of crisp passes on a power-play rush. Peter Olvecky gained the zone along the right boards and hit Stephane Veilleux in the slot and a flip pass to Miettinen streaming in on net from the left wing led to a quick one-timer, short-side.
