Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Dany Heatley and Antoine Vermette both recorded
a goal and an assist in Ottawa's 5-1 trouncing of the Carolina Hurricanes at
Dean McAmmond, Mike Fisher and Chris Phillips also scored for the Senators,
who snapped a five-game losing streak and notched just their fourth win in the
last 17 outings. Brian Elliott made 23 saves to earn the victory.
Joe Corvo had a power-play goal for the Hurricanes, who have dropped three in
a row. Cam Ward yielded all five goals on 40 shots in defeat.
Ottawa tallied twice in the game's opening 20 minutes. Jason Spezza flew down
the right wing and sent a behind-the-back pass to the slot for Heatley, who
fired the puck high over Ward's glove at the 3:45 mark. McAmmond then lit the
lamp with 8:51 remaining as his offering squeezed through the right arm of
Ward and trickled across the goal line.
Corvo's blast from the top of the left circle put Carolina on the board at
8:27 of the middle frame, then Vermette restored a two-goal edge with 26
seconds to go in the second period.
Fisher, appearing in his 500th career game, lit the lamp 8:29 into the third
period and Phillips added a marker with 4:47 left in the game.
Fisher is sixth on the Senators all-time games list, behind Daniel Alfredsson
(893), Wade Redden (838), Phillips (740), Radek Bonk (689) and Alexei Yashin
(504)...Ottawa forward Jarkko Ruutu returned to the lineup after serving a
two-game suspension for biting Buffalo's Andrew Peters last Tuesday...Carolina
finished 1-for-4 on the power play, while the Senators were 0-for-4.
