NHL Game Summary - San Jose at Tampa Bay

(Saturday, October 25th)

Final Score: San Jose 3, Tampa Bay 0

Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Brian Boucher stopped 22 shots for his second shutout in as many starts this season, and the San Jose Sharks topped the Tampa Bay Lightning, 3-0, at St. Pete Times Forum.

Marcel Goc, Ryan Clowe and Devin Setoguchi scored for the Sharks, who have won three of their last four and were coming off just their second loss of the season (7-2-0), a 4-3 loss to Florida Friday.

Former Lightning defenseman Dan Boyle had an assist in making his return to Tampa Bay after spending the last five-plus seasons with the club.

"Obviously that meant a lot to me," Boyle said. "Our goaltending played well and defensively we were much better because we've been struggling there the last few games."

Mike Smith was busy in facing 45 shots and did well to keep the Lightning within three goals. Tampa Bay was coming off its first win of the season, a 3-2 overtime victory against Atlanta on Tuesday that also gave new head coach Barry Melrose his first win behind the bench.

"This league is so tough to win games. We have to climb back in, there's still a long way to go, but we got to find some offense," Lightning center Chris Gratton said.

Goc finally broke the deadlock at the 7:57 mark of the second, beating Smith on the Sharks' 25th shot of the game. Boyle sent a pass to Goc, who let a slap shot go from just outside the left circle that sailed between the glove and the left pad.

San Jose gained a 2-0 advantage after a Marek Malik interference penalty brought on a power play. Clowe sent a screamer in on net from the high slot that found its way through traffic and past Smith with two minutes left in the period.

The Lightning tested Boucher with only six shots in the final stanza and handed the Sharks a trio of power-play opportunities. After assaulting Smith with several scoring chances, San Jose cashed in to take a 3-0 lead when Setoguchi skated out from behind the net to the left of Smith, beating him five-hole with a wrap-around snap shot with only 3:32 left to play.

San Jose peppered Smith with 16 shots in the first period but the netminder helped Tampa Bay skate to a scoreless tie entering the middle frame.
