NHL Game Summary - Vancouver at Chicago

(Sunday, October 19th)

Final Score: Chicago 4, Vancouver 2

Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Patrick Sharp tallied two goals and added an assist, as the Chicago Blackhawks won for the first time under new head coach Joel Quenneville, earning a 4-2 victory over the Vancouver Canucks.

Patrick Kane scored once and added two helpers for the Blackhawks, whose previous head coach, Denis Savard, was fired on Thursday. Quenneville had been the coach of St. Louis and Colorado and was a scout for Chicago before being named head coach, but the Blackhawks lost in a shootout at St. Louis on Saturday in his debut.

Cristobal Huet stopped 28-of-30 shots in the win -- his first with the Blackhawks, who have won two of three.

"It feels good the way things are going," Sharp said. "There's a lot of confidence on this team. We know if we play fast and play hard we will be rewarded."

Henrik Sedin and Pavol Demitra scored the goals for Vancouver, which has dropped two straight games. Roberto Luongo gave up the four goals on 26 shots in the loss.

"We've got a lot of capable people here and we all have to play up to our potential," Luongo said. "Three out of the four goals went off our guys. We just have to work harder and know that we won't get every bounce that comes along."

Demitra's goal opened the game's scoring at 9:32 of the first period, but just more than a minute later Brent Seabrook tied the game. Kane had the puck behind the goal line to the right of the net, and he dished it to the top of the left circle for Seabrook, whose one-timer went over Luongo's glove at 10:35.

A power-play tally from Sharp put Chicago in front later in the period. Sharp had the puck to the left of the crease and attempted a cross-ice pass to the right side for a potential one-timer. But on the way the puck hit the stick of Vancouver defenseman Mattias Ohlund and found the back of the net at 15:31.

"The lucky bounces we got come with hard work," Sharp said. "It shows if you keep skating, good things will happen."

Chicago carried the 2-1 lead through a scoreless second period, and added two more goals in the third.

On another Blackhawks power play, Kane banged in a loose rebound by the right post to make it 3-1 at the 6:58 mark. Later in the frame, a turnover led to a Chicago odd-man rush, and Sharp ripped a shot from the slot that trickled through Luongo for a three-goal lead with less than seven minutes left.

The Canucks added another goal with 4:52 on the clock when Sedin's shot from the left circle hit off a Chicago stick and went past Huet.
