NHL Game Summary - Phoenix at Anaheim|
(Sunday, January 4th)
Final Score: Anaheim 2, Phoenix 0
Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Jonas Hiller stopped all 29 Phoenix shots to
notch his third career shutout, and the Anaheim Ducks topped the Coyotes, 2-0,
at Honda Center.
Chris Pronger and Bobby Ryan got the goals for Anaheim, both on the power
play -- and both their seventh of the season -- as the Ducks won for just the
second time in their last seven games.
They did so without the services of the club's second leading scorer in Corey
Perry, who was suspended by the league for four games following an elbowing
incident in a loss to Philadelphia on Friday.
Scott Niedermayer got the primary assist on both tallies while Ryan also added
an assist in the win. Anaheim posted its first win on a four-game homestand
that concludes Tuesday against the Los Angeles Kings.
It was also the third shutout of the 2008-09 campaign for Hiller, who bested
former Ducks' goaltender and current Coyotes' netminder Ilya Bryzgalov.
Bryzgalov stopped 32-of-34 shots but took the hard-luck loss against his
former mates. Anaheim selected Bryzgalov in the second round of the 2000 draft
but Phoenix claimed him off waivers early last season.
The Coyotes had won three of their last four coming into Sunday's game and
next return home for a three-game homestand beginning Tuesday with scheduled
visits from Chicago, Tampa Bay and then Dallas.
The two squads came into the game tied for second place in the Pacific
Division with 43 points apiece, as both trail the mighty San Jose Sharks, who
have amassed an NHL-best 63 points through 38 games this season.
Pronger's slap shot evaded Bryzgalov 3:32 into the second period after the
visiting team was whistled for too many men on the ice.
A similar fate befell the Coyotes early in the third as the team was again
assessed a minor for the very same infraction and again a blast got by
Bryzgalov, this time off the stick of Ryan 2:59 into the third.
Hiller, who faced 18 shots over the first two periods, turned aside 11 in the
final frame en route to the win.
This was the second of six meetings between Phoenix and Anaheim this year.
Helped by two goals out of Shane Doan, the Coyotes posted a 4-2 win in Anaheim
on October 12 for their seventh win in the last 10 meetings with the Ducks. It
was also Phoenix's fourth win in the last five trips to the Honda
Center...Phoenix is 6-11-3 as the visiting team this year...Anaheim is 11-8-3
as the host club this season.
