NHL Game Summary - Florida at Pittsburgh|
(Saturday, January 3rd)
Final Score: Florida 6, Pittsburgh 1
Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Nathan Horton scored twice as Florida rode a
three-goal second period to beat Pittsburgh, 6-1, at Mellon Arena.
Bryan McCabe had a goal and one assist for the Panthers, who snapped a four-
game losing streak and earned their first win in Pittsburgh since December 5,
Richard Zednik, Ville Peltonen and Michael Frolik each tallied once and Craig
Anderson stopped 29 shots.
Ruslan Fedotenko provided the only offense for the Penguins, who have lost
four games in a row and suffered their worst home defeat of the season.
Starter Marc-Andre Fleury allowed two goals on five shots in the first period
before being pulled, then stopped six-of-seven shots over the final 20
minutes to suffer the loss. Dany Sabourin was victimized for three goals on 12
shots in the second period.
Sabourin's entry temporarily provided a spark and the Pens cut their deficit
to 2-1 at 1:37 when Fedotenko beat Anderson from a sharp angle along the goal
Florida extended its lead back to two with a power-play goal from McCabe at
8:03, and Zednik netted the rebound of McCabe's point shot with 8:36 left for
a 4-1 game.
Frustration boiled over for both clubs late in the period, and Pittsburgh
captain Sidney Crosby headlined the feud, hit with 19 penalty minutes after
grabbing and pummeling Florida's Brett McLean in a rare fight.
That failed to stoke the home team's fire, and Panthers went ahead 5-1 with
less than 90 seconds to play in the period as Horton streaked in alone and
beat Sabourin with a wrister.
Fleury was back in the cage for the start of the third but the Panthers
continued to attack, completing the rout at 6-1 at 4:14 on Frolik's shot from
the high slot.
Peltonen snapped a wrister inside the left post just after a Penguins penalty
expired for a 1-0 lead just past the midway point of the first period. Horton
clicked with 4:40 remaining, when his wrister from the left wing squeezed
between Fleury's arm and body.
