Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Eric Staal had a goal and two assists while
Cam Ward made 36 saves, and the Carolina Hurricanes blanked the Buffalo
Sabres, 3-0, at HSBC Arena.
Chad Larose and Sergei Samsonov also scored for Carolina, which recovered from
two straight losses in which the club lost by a combined score of 10-1. Ward
recorded his fourth shutout of the season in the win.
"The bottom line is we had to (win)," Staal said. "We had to respond (after
the back-to-back losses), we had to -- our backs were pretty much against the
wall. It's time to get points, we need wins."
Drew Stafford led Buffalo with six shots on net, but the Sabres lost for the
third time in four contests. Ryan Miller allowed two goals on 18 shots in the
first period, and Patrick Lalime stopped 28-of-29 shots in the final two

Lindy Ruff said. "I thought we had some players maybe play their worst game of

Buffalo continued to struggle on offense, and Samsonov's tip-in gave the
Hurricanes a 3-0 lead with 2:12 to play.
The season series is tied, 1-1...Carolina went 1-for-5 on the power play,
while Buffalo went 0-for-5...The Sabres outhit the Hurricanes despite the
