NHL Game Summary - Carolina at Buffalo

(Sunday, February 15th)

Final Score: Carolina 3, Buffalo 0

Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Eric Staal had a goal and two assists while Cam Ward made 36 saves, and the Carolina Hurricanes blanked the Buffalo Sabres, 3-0, at HSBC Arena.

Chad Larose and Sergei Samsonov also scored for Carolina, which recovered from two straight losses in which the club lost by a combined score of 10-1. Ward recorded his fourth shutout of the season in the win.

"The bottom line is we had to (win)," Staal said. "We had to respond (after the back-to-back losses), we had to -- our backs were pretty much against the wall. It's time to get points, we need wins."

Drew Stafford led Buffalo with six shots on net, but the Sabres lost for the third time in four contests. Ryan Miller allowed two goals on 18 shots in the first period, and Patrick Lalime stopped 28-of-29 shots in the final two frames.

"That was about as bad as we've had from a lot of players," Sabres head coach Lindy Ruff said. "I thought we had some players maybe play their worst game of the year."

Carolina took a two-goal lead in the first. Staal got the Hurricanes on the board with a power-play goal at 9:20, and added an assist on Larose's wrist shot at the 13:50 mark.

Ward made nine saves in the opening frame to keep Buffalo off the board.

Neither team could score in the second, as Lalime replaced Miller for the Sabres and made 16 saves in the period. Ward continued to be outstanding, stopping 12 more shots in the stanza.

Buffalo continued to struggle on offense, and Samsonov's tip-in gave the Hurricanes a 3-0 lead with 2:12 to play.
