NHL Game Summary - Buffalo at Toronto

(Thursday, January 1st)

Final Score: Buffalo 4, Toronto 1

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Derek Roy had two goals and an assist as the Buffalo Sabres downed the Toronto Maple Leafs, 4-1, at Air Canada Centre.

Jason Pominville had two goals while Drew Stafford and Thomas Vanek each had two assists for the Sabres, who had lost four of five coming into the game. Ryan Miller made 27 saves in the win.

"We got everybody on the same page tonight," said Roy. "We were skating hard and moving the puck well. We came out in the second and kept working hard. As a team we have to step up and play hard and I think we did that tonight."

John Mitchell scored the lone goal while Curtis Joseph was touched for four goals on 20 shots for the Maple Leafs, who have dropped four of their last five games.

"We were playing good, but when they got that first goal they got on a roll and we couldn't catch up," said Mitchell.

After a scoreless first period Buffalo scored three times in the second period to assume command of the game.

The first goal came off the stick of Pominville as he blasted a slap shot by Joseph for a 1-0 lead at the 6:50 mark of the frame.

About 2 1/2 minutes later, Roy made it a 2-0 game as his snap shot found the back of the net.

Pominville notched his second goal of the game at the 11:29 mark of the second when his wrist shot got past Joseph for his 12th goal of the season.

Roy made it a 4-0 game with his second goal of the contest when his backhander beat Joseph at the 5:58 mark of the third.

Toronto finally got on the board at the 8:29 mark of the third period when Mitchell banged in a rebound off a Jamal Mayers wraparound attempt to make it a 4-1 contest.

The Maple Leafs, though, were unable to get any closer as the Sabres skated out of the building with the win.

Neither side got on the board in the first period, but Toronto had a chance as the team was awarded a penalty shot with one minute left when a Buffalo player closed his hand on the puck in the crease. Nils Hagman took the shot, but Miller used a poke check to deflect the puck over the net.
