Final Score: Edmonton 3, Los Angeles 2 (SO)

Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Sam Gagner scored the game-winner in the shootout as the Edmonton Oilers edged the Los Angeles Kings, 3-2, at Staples Center.

Patrick O'Sullivan was the first shooter, but Dwayne Roloson made a glove save on O'Sullivan's wrister. Gagner then gave Edmonton the advantage as he buried a wrister into the right corner.

Alexander Frolov then tried to slip the puck between Roloson's pads, but the goaltender was able to keep it out of the net. Robert Nilsson then sealed the win as he slammed on the brakes in front of the net and was just able to tap the backhander past Jonathan Quick.

Dustin Penner and Shawn Horcoff each had a goal and an assist for the Oilers, who have won their past two games. Roloson stopped 39 shots for the win.

"It was a very competitive game and indicative of where everybody is in the standings and how important these games are," said Oilers coach Craig MacTavish. "Two teams that desperately wanted to win and the players played hard and it was a heck of a hockey game."

Drew Doughty and Dustin Brown each lit the lamp for the Kings, who have dropped their last two after a four-game winning streak. Quick stopped 19 shots in the loss.

"It was a hard game," said Kings coach Terry Murray. "We wanted to come out better then what we did in the first period. I didn't feel that we were skating and it's a playoff atmosphere with that kind of importance and we did not respond as we needed to. The second and third periods were terrific. It was hard work and it was a hard game down low, it was very emotional."

The Oilers drew first blood in the contest just 4:58 into the game. Hemsky skated through the middle with the puck on the backhand and from the left circle threw a pass between the legs of a King and an Oiler to Penner, whose one-timer got past Quick.

Skating on the man advantage, Edmonton took a 2-0 lead at the 13:11 mark of the first. Hemsky had the puck at the left circle and sent it to the low left side for Penner, who immediately passed it to the right circle for a one-timer by Horcoff that hit off the crossbar and went into the net.

Los Angeles thoroughly dominated the second period and outshot the Oilers, 16-3, but were only able to get one goal in the frame.

While on a 5-on-3, Doughty blasted a shot from the right point that went through a screen set up by Michal Handzus in front of the net to make it a 2-1 game at the 6:29 mark of the second.

Los Angeles nearly tied it about eight minutes into the third period, while shorthanded, as O'Sullivan picked off a weak pass in the neutral zone and skated in on a clean breakaway, but his shot hit off the left post.

With 1:40 to play, Andrew Cogliano was called for tripping and the Kings pulled Quick for a 6-on-4 advantage.

Los Angeles patiently worked the puck around the points after a left circle faceoff and Frolov's one-timer from the left point was tipped into the net by Brown with 25.7 seconds left in regulation.

Edmonton had a power play for the last 38 seconds of overtime, but were unable to light the lamp and the game went to the shootout.
