NHL Game Summary - Colorado at Calgary

(Tuesday, October 14th)

Final Score: Calgary 5, Colorado 4

Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Todd Bertuzzi scored twice, including the game- winner with nine minutes to go in regulation, as the Calgary Flames topped the Colorado Avalanche, 5-4, in a Northwest Division clash from the Pengrowth Saddledome.

Jarome Iginla registered a goal and an assist for Calgary, which yielded 11 goals in dropping a home-and-home series with the Vancouver Canucks to open the 2008-09 campaign. Daymond Langkow, Dion Phaneuf and Mike Cammalleri each collected two assists, while Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 25-of-29 shots to get the win.

"We didn't get the start to the year that we wanted," said Phaneuf. "Now we turned that around with a big win tonight."

Ryan Smyth scored a goal and assisted on another for the Avalanche, who have dropped three straight one-goal games to begin the season. It marks their worst start to a season since opening with four consecutive losses in 1998-99. Paul Stastny finished with two assists and Peter Budaj allowed five goals on 35 shots.

"It's tough. We are always playing from behind," Stastny said of the club's early struggles. "Especially on the road, it's always tough to come back. The effort is there. I think we just got to fix a few things."

Following an eventful first period that featured five goals, Colorado executed a magnificent passing sequence while up a man to draw even at the nine-minute mark of the second stanza. Joe Sakic sent a cross-ice pass to Stastny at the left circle and Stastny quickly slid the puck across to Smyth, who tucked it past the outstretched left leg of Kiprusoff, tying the game at three.

Calgary reclaimed the lead on Iginla's first goal of the season. With the Avalanche's Adam Foote in the penalty box for delay of game, David Jones failed on his clearing attempt and the puck eventually found Iginla, whose blazing wrister from the middle of the left circle beat Budaj on the glove side at the 7:23 mark of the third period.

Moments later, Iginla let go a hard shot from the right circle that Budaj stopped. Bertuzzi, coming in late, put the big rebound behind the Avalanche netminder with nine minutes left on the clock.

Ben Guite tallied 18 seconds later to make it a one-goal affair. Colorado then failed to score after Phaneuf went off for interference with a little over six minutes to play.

With time winding down, Budaj raced to the bench for an extra-skater, but a hooking infraction on Wojtek Wolski effectively closed the door on an Avalanche comeback.

Calgary netted a pair of power-play goals just under five minutes into the contest. Dustin Boyd picked up a loose puck in the slot and ripped it past Budaj at the 3:21 mark. Bertuzzi then lit the lamp 56 seconds later to give the Flames a 2-0 lead. A shot from the point deflected high in the low slot and Budaj attempted to haul in the puck with his glove, but whiffed and the hulking Bertuzzi rammed it home.

Cody McLeod put the Avs on the board with 8:12 remaining. Cody McCormick glided down the right side and fired a shot that Kiprusoff cleared into the middle of the ice, where McLeod buried the rebound.

Craig Conroy restored a two-goal lead for the Flames, whipping a backhander through the legs of Budaj, and John-Michael Liles' power-play marker in the final minute trimmed the deficit to 3-2.
