NHL Game Summary - NY Islanders at Pittsburgh
(Thursday, December 11th)
Final Score: Pittsburgh 9, NY Islanders 2
Pittsburgh, PA (Sports Network) - Petr Sykora and Pascal Dupuis both recorded
their first career hat tricks, as the Pittsburgh Penguins pummeled the New
York Islanders, 9-2, at Mellon Arena.
Sykora added an assist, while Miroslav Satan posted a goal and two helpers for
the Penguins, who snapped a three-game losing streak in convincing fashion.
Sidney Crosby collected three assists, while Evgeni Malkin chipped in a goal
and an assist for Pittsburgh. He leads the league with 48 points and 36
assists.
John Curry made 24 saves to get the win.
Mark Streit and Andy Sutton lit the lamp for the Islanders, who have dropped
five games in a row and seven of eight overall. Joey MacDonald was replaced by
Yann Danis after he allowed four goals on 19 shots in the opening 20 minutes.
Danis didn't fare any better, yielding five tallies on 19 shots over the next
two periods.
The Penguins thoroughly dominated the first period, outshooting the Isles
19-5, and emerged with a comfy 4-1 lead.
Dupuis took a cross-ice pass from Satan and fired a slap shot from the top of
the left circle that caromed off MacDonald's glove and trickled over the goal
line at the 6:25 mark.
Satan's power-play marker made it 2-0 with 6:11 remaining, then Streit
countered on the man advantage for New York nearly four minutes later.
Sykora, though, quickly restored a two-goal edge for Pittsburgh, rifling a
shot from the right circle that beat MacDonald on the glove side 11 seconds
after New York got on the board.
Philippe Boucher, who returned from a six-game absence due to an undisclosed
injury, capped the barrage 39 seconds later with a blast from the right point
that slid between MacDonald's pads.
Pittsburgh continued to pull away in the middle stanza. After Malkin found the
back of the net, Sykora scored a pair of power-play markers before Dupuis
scored in the final minute of the frame.
Sutton and Dupuis traded goals in the third period.
