Final Score: Atlanta 3, Tampa Bay 1
Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Kari Lehtonen made 40 saves as Atlanta shut down
Tampa Bay, 3-1, at St. Pete Times Forum.
"He was solid all around and I think he intimidates people to shoot when he's
playing like that," said Thrashers head coach John Anderson of his netminder.
Colin Stuart, Slava Kozlov and Ilya Kovalchuk tallied for the Thrashers, who
had lost six of seven coming in.
Gary Roberts picked up the lone goal for the Lightning, losers in five of
their last six games.
Mike McKenna suffered his first career regulation defeat, despite allowing two
goals on 23 shots.
Kozlov put Atlanta ahead by a goal 2:02 into the second, and Tampa looked like
it had evened the contest later in the period.
With 8:09 left in the period, Steven Stamkos was brought down from behind on a
partial breakaway and was awarded a penalty shot. The youngster made a deke to
the forehand at the right post but Lehtonen managed to smother the puck along
the goal line.
Despite a review which appeared to reveal that Lehtonen caught the puck inside
the net and over the goal line at the post, the original call was not
"I think everyone in the building knows the puck's in his glove and his
glove's past the goal line," admitted a bitter Stamkos. "With replay you have
to be able to see the whole puck, I guess that's the rule, and you can't see
the puck although you know it's in his glove."
Lehtonen stood tall in the third period, stopping all 17 shots he faced and
Kovalchuk hit the empty net with 10 seconds remaining to seal the game.
Roberts notched his fourth of the season to give the Bolts a 1-0 lead just
1:24 into the contest, then Stuart struck back for the visitors at 9:52
