NHL Game Summary - Buffalo at Ottawa

(Saturday, February 7th)

Final Score: Ottawa 3, Buffalo 2 (SO)

Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Mike Fisher notched the game-winner in the fourth round of the shootout to lift Ottawa over Buffalo, 3-2, at Scotiabank Place.

Fisher began the round by beating Ryan Miller with a backhander which hit the net just under the crossbar, giving Ottawa a 3-2 edge in scores. Derek Roy had a chance to continue the contest for Buffalo but shot high over the net to clinch the win for the home team.

Nick Foligno and Antoine Vermette scored in regulation for the Senators, who put the brakes on a four-game skid.

Brian Elliott stopped 28 shots for the win, his fifth of the season.

Adam Mair and Drew Stafford tallied for the Sabres, who saw their two-game win streak ended.

Miller took the loss despite standing up to a 42-shot barrage and allowing just two goals.

Ottawa picked up the game's first goal on the power play just after the midway point of the middle period, as Foligno followed up Brendan Bell's shot for his eighth of the season.

Vermette was awarded a goal retroactively near the end of the frame. His blistering slapper from the left circle with 2:52 left hit the back bracing of the net and bounced out so quickly that play resumed without a call. Following the next stoppage almost a minute later, a review confirmed the shot was good and the Sens were up 2-0.

Mair's deflection from the slot brought the Sabres within a goal 1:06 into the third period, then Stafford broke free and slipped a shot past Elliott on the power play for a 2-2 game at 7:25.

A scoreless overtime saw Miller make five saves and Elliott a pair to keep the outcome of the game in doubt until the shootout.
