Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - Ales Kotalik scored the winner in the shootout as the Buffalo Sabres defeated the New York Islanders, 4-3, despite blowing a two-goal lead late in the game.
The Islanders scored two goals in the final 1:34 of the third period and tied the contest with just two seconds left on the clock, but after a scoreless overtime the game was to be decided in the shootout.
Kotalik was the first shooter and he went to the backhand and lifted the puck past Joey MacDonald.
After Ryan Miller stopped Richard Park's low stuffer, Drew Stafford went from the backhand to the forehand and slid the disc past the left pad of MacDonald. Miller then preserved the win when he stopped Kyle Okposo's low wrister.
Jochen Hecht, Jason Pominville and Clarke MacArthur each had a goal for the Sabres, who snapped a three-game skid. Miller finished with 32 saves.
Chris Campoli, Mike Comrie and Jeff Tambellini each had a goal for the Islanders, who failed to successfully follow up their first win of December and have lost 11 of their last 12 games. MacDonald made 34 stops.
Buffalo held a two-goal lead after MacArthur scored with 5:23 to play, but the Islanders were able to answer twice and send the game to overtime.
New York made it a one-goal game on the power play with MacDonald on the bench for a 6-on-4. Bill Guerin sent a pass from the left side to the right where Comrie slammed it home with 1:34 to play.
In the final moments of the game again with MacDonald on the bench, Okposo fought off a checker along the right circle and sent the puck to the slot for Campoli, who snapped a wrister into the right corner of the net with two seconds left in regulation.
Buffalo got on the board with a power-play goal at the 13:01 mark of the first period as Maxim Afinogenov threw a shot on net from the top of the left circle that MacDonald stopped, but Hecht was there to slam home the rebound.
Miller stopped all eight shots he faced in the first 20 minutes.
The Islanders tied the game near the midway mark of the second period as Mark Streit sent a pass from behind the net out front for Tambellini, who one-timed it past Miller.
Pominville, though, gave Buffalo a 2-1 lead with 6:51 left in the second as his wrister beat MacDonald for his 10th goal of the season.
The Sabres padded their lead with 5:23 left in the third period as Stafford sent a backhand pass on the fly from the slot over to the right circle where MacArthur's one-timer trickled past the glove of MacDonald for a 3-1 lead.
