Sabres place captain Rivet on waivers

Buffalo, NY (Sports Network) - The Buffalo Sabres placed defenseman and team captain Craig Rivet on waivers Wednesday.

Teams will now have the opportunity till noon on Thursday to claim the 36- year-old blueliner. If he is not claimed, Buffalo general manager Darcy Regier said the team will then decide a course of action.

"We wanted to give him an opportunity to play. I spoke with (Craig's) agent yesterday morning and he had expressed a trade," said Regier. "We tried to move him through a trade, and unfortunately weren't able to and so, this is the next step in helping him resume his career in a playing way."

The 16-year veteran has one goal and two assists over just 23 games this season. He has been a healthy scratch for the past 16 games and is in the final year of his contract.

"We've got some young guys in Portland that we may want to have a look at and this is one of the things that we have to do beyond giving him the opportunity to play somewhere," said Regier.

A third-round pick of Montreal in the 1992 draft, Rivet has 49 goals and 187 assists over 909 games with the Canadiens, Sharks and Sabres.
