NFL Game Summary - Tampa Bay at Washington
(Sunday, October 4th)
Final Score: Washington 16, Tampa Bay 13
Landover, MD (Sports Network) - Santana Moss had a pair of receptions for 74
yards including the go-ahead 59-yard TD catch late in the third quarter as
Washington rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to clip Tampa Bay, 16-13,
at FedEx Field.
Jason Campbell was subpar under center, completing just 12-of-22 passes for
170 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions for the Redskins (2-2), who
put to rest the memory of a crippling loss to previously-winless Detroit last
Sunday which ended the Lions' 19-game losing streak.
Clinton Portis racked up 98 yards on 25 carries and Chris Cooley added five
catches for 65 yards and a score.
"I knew I could play this morning," said Portis, who was listed as
questionable with a calf injury, but who was effective over the entire
contest. "It's going to be impossible to keep me off the field unless I got a
cast or crutches I'm playing."
Starting for the ineffective Byron Leftwich, Josh Johnson was 13-of-22 for 106
yards, one score and a pick for the Buccaneers (0-4), who haven't opened a
season with four straight losses since 2004.
Cadillac Williams rushed for 77 yards on 16 carries and Antonio Bryant posted
four receptions for 44 yards and the lone touchdown for Tampa Bay, which saw
Aqib Talib record three interceptions in defeat.
DeAngelo Hall's pick of Johnson on the first Buccaneers drive of the second
half eventually resulted in Washington's first points of the game as Shaun
Suisham hit a 42-yarder to make it 10-3.
Tampa Bay then failed to gain a first down, and on the 'Skins next series,
Campbell hit Cooley in the end zone for a 17-yard score but the extra point
was blocked by Ronde Barber and the Bucs led 10-9 with 3:32 left in the
period.
After another three-and-out by Tampa Bay and punt, Moss caught a Campbell pass
in stride on the first play and rolled 59 yards to give the Redskins a 16-10
advantage.
Talib picked off his third pass of the contest early in the fourth quarter and
Tampa Bay's plodding drive lasted nearly eight minutes despite going only 48
yards in 12 plays. Mike Nugent brought Tampa within 16-13 after hitting a 22-
yarder with 4:25 left in regulation.
Washington failed on its next series and a punt pinned the visitors inside
their own 20 with 1:54 to play. However, on a 3rd-and-1 from the Tampa 28,
Jeremy Jarmon punched the ball out of Bucs running back Clifton Smith's hands
with Chris Horton recovering there.
Campbell took a knee on three plays to run out the remainder of the clock.
"We got over the hump by getting into the redzone and converting," Cooley
said. "Since I've been here I've gotten used to winning ugly."
The Bucs defense sacked Campbell twice on the opening series and recovered his
fumble at the 10 on the second. Two plays later Johnson hit Bryant for an
eight-yard touchdown.
Nugent missed a 48-yarder wide right midway through the second quarter after
Talib's second pick set Tampa Bay up at its own 43, but Nugent finished off
the Bucs' next series with a 37-yard make on the final play of the half.
