NBA Game Summary - Memphis at LA Lakers
(Friday, March 28th)
Final Score: Memphis 114, LA Lakers 111
Los Angeles, CA (Sports Network) - Rudy Gay scored 28 points to lead the Memphis Grizzlies in an improbable victory over the Los Angeles Lakers, 114-111, at the Staples Center.
Darko Milicic poured in 22 points and grabbed 12 rebounds for Memphis, which stopped a two-game slide to win for the third time in five tries. Hakim Warrick totaled 16 points and Mike Miller had 10 and 10 rebounds. Kyle Lowry ended with 11 points.
Kobe Bryant recorded his 23rd career 50-point game, dropping 53 points for the Lakers, who have lost two in a row, three of four and three straight at home. The club also sits one game behind San Antonio and New Orleans for the top spot in the Western Conference, but still holds a half-game lead over Phoenix for first place in the Pacific Division.
Bryant also set a franchise record with 1,065 career three-pointers for the Lakers, going 9-of-17 from beyond the arc on Friday. Sasha Vujacic chipped in 14 points and Jordan Farmar 11 in defeat. Lamar Odom hauled in 11 boards and had 11 assists.
A Lowry layup made it a five-point Memphis lead, but Vujacic answered with a three from the right wing to cut the deficit to 111-109 with 44.7 ticks left.
The Grizzlies then gave the ball right back to the Lakers on a Lowry rebound gone awry, and Bryant drove down the court, finding Odom on the right wing wide open. Odom missed the go-ahead shot and Lowry grabbed the rebound, and was fouled. He drained both shots from the stripe to push Memphis' edge to 113-109 with 16.6 seconds left.
A Ronny Turiaf tip-in brought the Lakers within two points, but it was too little too late as the Grizzlies pulled off the win.
"That was an unusual night for us," Lakers head coach Phil Jackson said. "We have to set up defensively, our guys couldn't close off the lane. Memphis is a three-point shooting team, but they punished us inside tonight."
The Grizzlies held a slight 32-30 lead after 12 minutes of basketball, and the clubs found themselves knotted at 53 at the break, despite Bryant having 34 of his points in the first half.
After trading buckets for the first part of the second half, a jumper from Derek Fisher and five points from Bryant opened a 70-63 Lakers lead with about seven minutes left in the third.
Moments later, a Miller dunk sparked a 14-0 Memphis run that contributed to the Grizzlies' 89-80 lead after three full quarters of play. Miller had seven points on the surge.
The Lakers pulled as close as five points, though, a Gay dunk increased Memphis' cushion back to nine, 98-89, with just under 8 1/2 minutes left in regulation.
Four straight points from Luke Walton brought the Lakers within five and, after exchanging baskets, a Vujacic three eventually pulled LA to within 109-106.
"This was a great win for us," Gay said. "We played great for most of the game. This shows what we can do, our record doesn't show the talent we have on this team."
Pau Gasol, who was obtained from the Grizzlies in a midseason trade, is averaging 18.8 points and 7.9 rebounds in 19 games with the Lakers this season. The seven-footer has now missed eight straight games with a sprained left ankle. The Lakers are 4-4 in the stretch without Gasol...The Lakers are 24-11 as the home team this season. Memphis is 6-30 on the road this season...The Lakers are 2-1 against Memphis this season and had won four of the last six contests in the series.
