NBA Game Summary - New Jersey at New York

(Monday, March 24th)

Final Score: New Jersey 106, New York 91

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Vince Carter had 27 points, six rebounds and seven assists, as the playoff-hopeful Nets snapped a nine-game road skid with a 106-91 rout of the Knicks, beating New York for the first time this season.

Richard Jefferson tallied 26 points and Nenad Krstic chipped in a season-best 22 for the Nets, who pulled within one game of Atlanta for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Josh Boone had eight points and 11 rebounds for New Jersey, which snapped a two-game overall slide and won for just the fourth time in its last 13 contests.

The Nets host Indiana, another team fighting for a playoff spot, on Wednesday in the opener of a home-and-home series. The Pacers, who were off Monday, are a half-game behind the Nets.

New Jersey finished 1-3 against the Knicks this season. New York lost its bid to sweep the season series from its Atlantic Division rival for the first time since the 1990-91 season.

"We've never really determined ourselves and our season the way we play against the Knicks," Jefferson said. "They were able to get some wins against us this season for the first time in a while and people lost some focus on that. It's not about any individual team, or rivalry, it's about trying to get the most wins and help ourselves to the playoffs."

Jamal Crawford had 26 points and eight assists for the Knicks, who have lost 12 of their last 13 games overall and seven in a row at home. The seven home losses ties a franchise-record for a single season. It's also their longest skid ever at the current Madison Square Garden. They last dropped seven in a row at home during the 1963-64 season.

"It's tough on everybody, but you have to take some positives out and try to get better," Crawford said.

At 19-51, the Knicks are nine losses away from possibly their first 60-defeat campaign in franchise history.

A Devin Harris finger roll layup and Carter's three-pointer expanded the Nets lead to 28-18 with under two minutes left in the opening quarter. New Jersey's lead stood at 30-22 going into the second, and the Nets widened that margin by scoring the first seven of the next period, capped by a Bostjan Nachbar jumper.

The Knicks were within 56-45 at the half, but couldn't make a big dent in the deficit. The Nets scored 11 in a row in the third to expand their lead to 74-52, with Krstic's jumper culminating the burst with 5:02 remaining. Carter's three-pointer moved the cushion to 79-54.

"We really came out strong," Boone said. "I think that was the key. We got out on the break and we were playing really good defense early in the game. It kept carrying over."

Facing a 19-point deficit entering the fourth, the Knicks never trimmed it under double digits.
