NBA Game Summary - Atlanta at New York

(Sunday, March 16th)

Final Score: Atlanta 109, New York 98

New York, NY (Sports Network) - Joe Johnson scored a game-high 28 points and dished out 11 assists, as the Atlanta Hawks pulled away late to defeat the New York Knicks, 109-98, at Madison Square Garden.

Marvin Williams had 25 points and eight rebounds, while Josh Childress finished with 22 and nine boards for the Hawks, who opened a three-game road trip by winning their second in a row to pull into a tie with idle New Jersey for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Both clubs are 28-38. Josh Smith added 15 points in the victory.

"We just have to come out and play with a little more sense of urgency," Johnson said. "We have to take it one game at a time and play everyone like it's our last. We're trying to make the playoffs and need to buckle down the last few games."

Nate Robinson poured in 23 points for the Knicks, who have lost eight of their last nine games. Fred Jones chipped in 14 points off the bench for the Knicks, who got 13 points and eight boards from Zach Randolph.

"We didn't play good tonight, Randolph said. "We didn't get defensive stops and they scored in transition. We just have to play better."

Atlanta carried an 85-79 lead into the fourth quarter, where the margin reached 92-82 after Johnson completed a three-point play. Al Horford's jumper made it 102-87 with 5:34 left, but a 6-0 Knick run cut the deficit to single digits.

Childress knocked down a trey to restore a double-digit cushion, 105-93, with 3:41 remaining and New York never recovered.

The Hawks led 21-20 after the opening 12 minutes and held a 53-49 advantage at halftime.
