NBA Game Summary - LA Lakers at New Jersey
(Tuesday, February 5th)
Final Score: LA Lakers 105, New Jersey 90
East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - Pau Gasol scored 24 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in his Lakers debut as Los Angeles downed New Jersey, 105-90, at the Izod Center.
The Lakers acquired Gasol last Friday from the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for three players, the draft rights to Marc Gasol and first-round picks in 2008 and 2010.
"I was pretty comfortable," Gasol said. "I still don't know a lot of wrinkles but my teammates made me feel comfortable. I played pretty well and hopefully it will stay that way."
Derek Fisher added a season-high 28 points for the Lakers, who have won three straight games. Vladimir Radmanovic chipped in with 16 points and Lamar Odom had 14 points and 15 boards.
Kobe Bryant finished with just six points on 3-of-13 shooting after suffering a finger injury to his shooting hand in the second quarter. It was the first time since January 5, 2007 that the Lakers superstar failed to score in double figures, a span of 93 games.
"It wasn't throbbing," Bryant said of the finger. "During the game, it just felt like it wasn't there."
Vince Carter had 27 points for the Nets, who lost their second straight and for the 11th time in 13 games. Bostjan Nachbar netted 19 points and 10 boards off the bench, while Richard Jefferson finished with 12 points.
"When you hold him (Kobe) to less than 10 points you hope you have a chance to win the game," Carter said. "But, Pau was the difference. He dominated on both ends."
The Lakers entered the final frame with a four-point edge and things remained close in the opening minutes. A Jefferson reverse dunk, with 6:12 left in the contest, drew the Nets to within three points, 84-81.
But, Los Angeles responded with an 11-2 run to put things away. Gasol fueled the burst with a pair of layups and Fisher finished it with a driving layup to make it 95-83.
The Nets never got closer than nine points the rest of the way.
The Nets took a slim 27-26 advantage after the opening quarter and the teams were deadlocked at 47 by the half.
The Lakers grabbed a little breathing room, 75-71, heading to the fourth quarter.
