A 14-7 run midway through the third quarter boosted the Rockets to a 63-56 lead, ending on Yao's turnaround jumper with 1:57 left. Rasho Nesterovic's jumper with 44 seconds to go brought Toronto within 63-62, but Head's five straight points to end the quarter put Houston up 68-64 after three.
An 8-4 burst midway through the fourth quarter, ended by Yao's pair from the line, gave Houston an 80-72 lead.
"In the fourth quarter, you can't make any mistakes," Yao said. "I wanted to put the ball in the hoop and get the lead and go home."
Battier's three-pointer with 1:15 remaining put the home team ahead by 11, and Alston's trey with seconds to go put the exclamation point on the victory.
