NBA Game Summary - Boston at Seattle
(Thursday, December 27th)
Final Score: Boston 104, Seattle 96
Seattle, WA (Sports Network) - Ray Allen struggled shooting in his return to Seattle, but the Celtics got strong performances from Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett in a 104-96 victory over the SuperSonics, and already matched their win total from last season.
Pierce had a season-high 37 points and Garnett tallied 23 points and 14 rebounds for the Celtics, who have captured four straight and 13 of 14 overall.
Allen got a standing ovation during the pregame introductions, but finished just 4-of-13 from the field for 10 points. This was the first time he faced his former team since being traded on draft night. Seattle dealt the seven- time All-Star guard to the Celtics for guard Delonte West, forwards Wally Szczerbiak and Georgetown's Jeff Green, who was chosen with the No. 5 overall pick.
Allen, who played four-plus seasons with the Sonics, was on the floor for 38 minutes and, despite his lowest point production of the season, the Celtics kept rolling.
The Celtics, off to a 24-3 start, have already equaled their total number of wins from their 24-58 season last year when they finished with the worst record in the Eastern Conference.
"The fans have always been great here, it was great to be a part of it," Allen said. "It was great. Getting back in this building brings up a lot of memories, a lot of big games we played in this building."
Boston had a season-low five turnovers on Thursday and beat the Sonics for the 12th time in the last 18 meetings.
Kevin Durant had 25 points to pace the Sonics, losers in four of their last five games. West had 19 points and eight assists.
"They made their shots point-blank," Durant said. "We always had to look out for Ray. We have to play better help defense. It is tough playing against a three-headed monster."
The Sonics were within 70-67 going into the final quarter, but the Celtics were too strong. A Pierce jumper moved the Celtics to a 77-70 lead, and another bucket from him had the cushion at 83-72 with 8:24 left.
A three-pointer from James Posey extended the margin to 91-77 with 6:26 left and the Sonics couldn't get closer than eight the rest of the way.
Allen's layup boosted the Celtics to a 15-10 lead and Boston was in front 24-19 going into the second.
Szczerbiak tied the game at 32 with a three-pointer with 7:31 left in the half, but Posey countered with a jumper from beyond the arc.
Allen's three gave the Celtics a 40-37 lead later in the quarter and Boston went into the break with a 47-46 edge.
This was the first of two meetings between the clubs this season. Boston is scheduled to host the SuperSonics on March 12...Eddie House had 13 points and Posey 10 for Boston, which won despite shooting 39.5 percent...Szczerbiak had 14 points and Chris Wilcox 13 for Seattle, which held a 50-42 edge in rebounds.
